It feels like we are wasting precious time

FMLA is a federal act. All states have it, but employers may in practice apply it somewhat differently. It is best to have your manager in your corner before approaching HR to invoke it. Also, it only applies to employers who have 50+ employees within 75 miles and for whom you have worked the equivalent of a year full time.

You're right, I should have specified that opportunities for paid leave depend on the state, company policies, any vaca/sick days you have banked, sometimes your income, and other factors.

The federal FMLA provides for your keeping your job, not continuing pay.

Is there any way you can work from home? I know what you mean. My brother’s wife is going to be able to work from home most of the time so she can spend more quality time with my brother who has ALS.
