Hello all
I am a 34 year-old female. I want to start off by saying that I do have a diagnosis of functional neurological disorder. (FND) I was diagnosed 8 years ago. My symptoms go in and out of remission. I experience many sensory sensations and momentary paralysis and weakness.. meaning I would experience extreme weakness or paralysis for maybe up to 3 seconds at a time.
I noticed back in December I started experiencing recurring symptoms of my FND. However, I have become increasingly concerned over the last week of slurred speech and swallowing difficulties.. I have experienced slurred speech as an FND symptom which cleared up a number of years ago. The past week I am struggling to initiate a dry swallow. I’m able to do it but I’m conscious that I’m needing a second to do it.. I am slurring and stumbling over my words again. I have a sensation that I have spit in the corners of my mouth. I am able to eat and drink I would say normally. I’m struggling to understand why I can more or less eat normally and drink normally but initiating a dry swallow seems to be a problem?
To see if I had an issue, I set a timer and I drank a pint and a half of water in one minute. I am noticing that sometimes when I talk, my voice sounds a little rough and I feel like I’ve got a post nasal drip at the back of my throat. Sometimes when I swallow it feels a little gunky and thicker. The sides of my neck going up into my ears feel uncomfortable and heavy.. I think my tongue is normal. I don’t tend to look at it too much but I seem to have all flexibility can puff my cheeks can put my tongue in my cheek, I can put my tongue on my nose.. a few nights ago, I experienced a sensation of a zap feeling at the back of my throat.. that to me did feel like a very functional sensory FND symptom.
I’ve been experiencing all over muscle twitches however, I have experienced them on and off over the years with my FND symptoms.. I have had intense vibrating symptoms in my hands my arms, my legs and I had a sensation of two minutes of vibrating in my tongue and my tongue felt too big for my mouth. That feel left within 5 minutes. All these sensory symptoms have always been very intermittent. They leave as fast as they turn up. And I’m trying to think that I’m experiencing the swallowing issue and speechless while I am experiencing symptoms of what I would say seems like an FND flareup.
If I was experiencing old sensory symptoms, I would not feel concerned because I have the issue with the dry swallowing and the slurred speech and I’ve learnt a little bit over the years about neurological disorders. I am increasingly becoming concerned that I’m showing early signs of bulbar MND.
