Good day, I’ve been reading several posts and trying to learn as much as I can. I had a compression injury to my head late September and in December these “als-like” symptoms started. It started with difficulty swallowing food. The food just sits like my swallowing mechanism doesn’t work. It progressed to slurring my speech within a few weeks. I don’t slur all the time but feels like the tip of my tongue is not working the way it was.

I went the the doctor. She thinks it’s dry mouth.

I did have an MRI of my brain and cervical spine after my compression injury which was normal. I was ok believing these things were due to dry mouth but last couple days my tongue has been doing these involuntary spasms when I’m trying to sleep which wakes me up. It feels like a snake in my mouth. My tongue goes crazy and I sit up and it stops. I am going back to the doctor but do you think this could be indicative of an early involuntary spasms associated with als??

Doubt it. But I would ask about a sleep study, the screening phase of which can be done at home these days. Making sure you are hydrated is always a good idea, and if there are foods that cause problems, it could even be a warning of an adult-onset food allergy.

Thank you for your reply. I found that if I run my tongue along my top teeth the same spasm I have at night is replicated. Weird. I know this would not be a random spasm as what happens with ALS but it does show a form of tongue weakness, I guess? I will speak with my doctor this week. I am slurring horrible today. My kids are noticing. 😢Thanks again.

Update: Went to the doctor today and will be referred to neurology for assessment. Doctor also wants to research best bloodwork to run and do a full panel on me for autoimmune or other causes.
