My PALS recently received his powered wheelchair. Thoughts on needing to add it to our homeowners or auto insurance policy? I know retail for the chair is $20000-25000, though Medicare paid for it. Who would pay to replace it if we had a car wreck or house fire, etc? Or am I overthinking this?

Things may vary depending on where you are located, so it would be worthwhile talking directly to your insurance company about what is covered.

In 2019 my wheelchair van was stolen with a Permobil F5 wheelchair in the van. We recovered the van with the wheelchair still in it, but substantial damage was done to both the van and the wheelchair.

My auto insurance paid for damage to the van. It was declared a total loss. We bought it back from the insurance company and had it repaired.

The van's contents, including the wheelchair, were covered by my homeowner's policy. The wheelchair was damaged badly enough for the insurance company to declare it a total loss also.

Filing the claim was a major hassle. I had to provide proof of ownership for everything stolen from or damaged in the van. It was a year before the two claims were settled and we spent hundreds of hours chasing down the details. In the end, we were fairly compensated for the loss, but I was surprised how much effort was involved in getting to that point.

Note that we had done a photo inventory of our possessions years ago. I had updated that inventory a few months before the van was stolen. I had pictures and in many cases receipts of the things that were stolen. Collectively, these items provided the proof of ownership the insurance company required.

Without such proof, our insurance company would have refused to reimburse us for much of our loss.

As a final thought, I don't know the details, but I have read that if your Medicare-funded wheelchair is damaged or stolen, Medicare will fund a replacement. I don't know how reliable that information is.

Thanks, Steve. We’ll be at the ALS clinic tomorrow, so I can get their opinion, too.

With documentation, if there is no other potential funder (like car or home insurance, or a common carrier such as an airline), Medicare should fund a replacement, but as with all DME, it would be slow going.

Most homeowner policies would require a declaration and additional premium for an item of that size, I believe. If not done, I doubt they would cover it.

I live in Colorado. Our wheelchair and van were stolen in Texas. Both auto and home insurance are with USAA.

We did not have any special provisions for coverage of the wheelchair. It was covered by our homeowners policy.

Steve.

Thanks, Steve. Good to know.
The ALS clinic had no knowledge of patients getting supplemental insurance for a wheelchair. So I’ll quit worrying about this.
