I am new to this and and full of questions. I have a very dear friend of mine who is going now on 2 years since told he has ALS. Now confined to a wheelchair and having troubles with everything else. We live in Akron, OH and from all the doctors he has gone and seen give us very little help. The specialist he is seeing told him that HGH was the only thing that will help him, but he stated that he could not aquire HGH that this is illeagal for him to get. I have done much reading on different kinds of treatment but every thing we have taken to the doctor he says no. I have heard that HGH does help, not sure where to get it or to find a doctor who will help. I have also heard of Bee Therapy, don't know much about it or where to even start on that one. and now I am reading about lithum and again the doctor has not tried this either. Does anyone know of a doctor in this area that can help? I am looking for anything that can help him. All my hugs and kisses are not going to slow this down. Help!

Hello lanyom

It doesn't sound like your doctor is very informed. First of all, HGH IS NOT illegal. Many endocrinolgist have people on HGH therapy to slow the aging process. It's illegal to take it if you're an athlete but it can be prescribed by any physician. When it comes to ALS, I'm not sure how much of a benefit it would be, though. I know of only one study that used artificial growth homone (not human growth hormone, HGH) and didn't find any difference over a 12 month period. The other thing is that HGH is very expensive and if there isn't any evidence it will benefit someone, insurance is probably not going to pay for it.
If your doctor hasn't heard of lithim and the promise it might hold when it comes to ALS, it's my guess that he/she isn't an ALS specialist.
If you live in Akron, your best bet would be either the Cleveland Clinic or Ohio State. They are both ALS certified and you would be in very good hands.
Take care and if you any further questions, you know where to find us.

MDA Clinic

If he hasn't already done so, he needs to contact the local Muscular Dystrophy Association office and get registered. They can then send him to the nearest MDA Clinic for tri-monthly evaluations.

MDA covers all the costs that would not be picked up by his insurance.

You can find your local office at www.mdausa.org

God Bless.

Kevin
