I just recently got on this web site and so far have learned more than my dad has told me...There still are things i don't understand...like this test EMG..what is it...My dad is a very private person and feelslike if i need to know he will tell me..He is currently going to a all natural Doctor which i am leary of....Should i talk him into going to a "real" doctor or let him continue seeing her... He has so much trouble breathing and swallowing but she stills gives him 30 pills to take everday...Please give mesome advice..i want the best for my daddy.

Hey and welcome to the forum. In my opinion I think your dad should try to find a ALS clinic and make an appt. 30 pills is alot to be taking. Applesauce is the best thing for
taking pills. It makes it so much easier to swallow them. I got that info. from speech
therapist at ALS clinic. The clinic has alot to offer ALS patients. I had 3 emg's before I was diagnosed. Someone else will be better at telling you exactly what it is. I don't have all the proper words to explain it. I just know it requires needles and some kind
of eletric shock. Rhonda

Hi Tonya,

If your Dad is having trouble breathing, he probably needs a Bi-Pap machine. This will make him more comfortable, and also allow his breathing muscles to rest, thereby extending their usefulness. This is basic ALS treatment. If your Dad's Doctor is not recommending this, you should seek out an ALS specialty clinic.

Hi Tonya. Try this site. It's not too technical and gives a good explanation of the EMG.
AL.

fIRST OF OFF GET DAD AWAY FROM THAT QUACK a BIPAP is a machine that you use for breahing It rest your lung by breathing for them the air flows into your lungs with presure You can use it at night only or 24/7 He will have more energy and it will give his lungs a rest while he is on it.may even prolong his life and delay a ventilator Pat

I have tried and tried to get him to go to a real Doctor. but he says se gives him hope..I think people like that will pay one of these days..If she could cure him i would think there would be no ALS....So a BIPAP is not a ventilator?

Hope

Dear Rhonda

I understand about wanting a miracle. My husband had a friend who was very religous and she kept telling him how he would be healed. Its wrong to give someone false hope, she does not come around anymore because my husband is getting worse. Your father needs to see a specialist and soon.

Hi Tonya,

A Bi-Pap is similar to a vent, but it is "non-invasive". That means it doesn't require any surgery to connect to your body. It connects using a mask over your nose, or nose and mouth. It should allow your Dad to sleep comfortably and rest his lungs. This will give him more energy during the day.
