Hi everyone i have a question, "How did your speech become affected?" I know a lot of people say slurred but i am looking for examples....

The reason is, i just went back to work and had all day meetings. Normally i am the annoying one who likes to answer first or talk for the table. Half way through the day words would come out funny. It felt like my tongue was sticking to the roof of my mouth and i would have to say certain words over kind of like when someone stutters. I was tripping on letters or tongue tied?! To me that is not slurring... Please reply.. thank you Sam

what I have found

Hi my name is Kevin got my DX on June 9 so far it is my speech thst is affected I guess you can it is slurred speech, But when you have PBP the muscles in the mouth area tounge are not right,so I have trouble forming my words,I have to speak slowly and over annonciate to be understood,my speech issues have been going on almost two years now, when they were first starting they were very slight but there and have gotten progressivly worse, guess I am lucky as this is the only problem that is dibilitating. Sure is frustrating though, take care and I wish you the best.. Kevin

I quess the best way to discribe it .You sound like you been drinking. The tongue is atrophied and does form to pronounce the words correctly not all words for me it started mostly D T for me .Hope that helped.

Sam,

My husband's speech is "slurred." Like Pat said, sounds like one has been drinking. His voice has become a little nasal sounding. When he becomes tired he has to be careful to enunciate his words and they sound forced. Sometimes he gets loud because his voice is kind of "raspy" at times.

speech

Thanks for the replies, maybe i was having a hard time because i was tired or talking for such a long period of time...... I do not think it has spread to where it is affecting my speech, the examples are reassuring.

Hi Kevin, that is my husbands name by the way! I had a couple questions..... Did you ever get a weird tightening feelilng in your neck like you had huge swollen glands or someone was choking you? Did you ever get a weird tightening feeling that traveled under your tongue and alongside your face? I used to get jaw pain on my left side that followed alongside my ear... I never knew what it was... My tongue on that side would twitch or vibrates on the side of the tongue, now the other side does it. This comes and goes, but when i stick my tongue out it goes crazy with ripple movements, but it takes a couple of seconds of protrusion. I know these are weird questions, but i thought you could help with some answers.. Thanks so much, great name by the way!

Sam - the way you describe your neck and jaw is exactly what I am experiencing of lately. I am so very scared because I was diagnosed with myopathy, but the meds aren't working and my progression sounds more like als everyday. How long have you been experiencing the neck and jaw problems? My jaw weakness started in feb., but now I have raspy voice off and on, tight, choking neck muscles, lump in throat. It seems worse everyday and I am worried about the day I can't swallow or speak.

When I Yawn I get a big bulge under my jaw Which is very painful, but doesnt last long and my tongue vibrates when I stick it out Pat

The neck swelling/choking sensation started a year and half ago. I was sick on and off with sinus infections and thought i had swollen glands but the docs said they were minimally swollen. Two years ago i had this weird tightening feeling run from my left hand up my arm, then up my neck, under my tongue and alongside my jaw line. I then had jaw pain which now i know was muscle spasms in my jaw, i went so far as to have a tooth pulled as to find out why i would have this happening. My left ear would feel pressure fullness too. Then it subsided over time and my head and neck got smaller. I started having twitching in my tongue just recently, but had twitching with protrusion way before that. When i laugh really hard for a long time my muscles in my face really hurt and get tight, and the muscles in the back of my head do too.... My neck has become weak and would get knots and i looked at pictures of myself over that time and noticed i was always sitting with my head resting on my hand supported by my elbow. I have minimal to say the least swallowing problems, slight speech problem, and i can hold my head up just fine but it is a lot smaller (neck, head.) I do not get the spasms in my jaw nor do i get them in my neck anymore unless i get really sick with a virus like strep.... the spasms after awhile do not hurt because the muscles cant make them happen anymore...... I hope this helps

Hi, my name is Sherry. I have bulbar onset ALS. You should make an appt. at a neur-muslcular dr. or an ALS clinic. This will answer your questions. Everyone is different. It sounds much like my symptoms, but don't let that scare you it could be a number of things. Neuro in nature sounding. I started with the slurring speech,(drunk sounding), some words even came out wrong. My voice is deep and nasal and my tongue "vibrates" too. It is worse when I have a long day, am stressed and emotional. My doctor gave me a simple explanation for persons who are unaware about the diagnosed., "The nerves on the path to my mouth, throat and lungs are dying and the signal does not reach the destination or if it does it is slow or like an engine that needs new spark plugs." Do you have trouble swallowing or choke? I have several choking episodes in a week, some worse than others. My lungs are not well either. Go to your GP and get a referral to a specialist. Do not give up until they answer your questions and do not be afraid to get a second or third opinion. One dr(?) told me he did not know what I had but I would just have to "live with it". Well if you do not know what "IT" is how do you know I'll have to live with it. My Mom always said cross one bridge at a time, you should find out how big your bridge is before you start over one you do not need to be on. Good luck and GOD BLESS! Sherry

Sammantha, Try the pbp forum too. Progressive Bulbar Palsy is being diagnosed. as a disease of its on. sherry

My mom's speech problems started with her sounding very much like an old person whose dentures are loose. It progressed to her sounding like she was drunk and dealing with too much saliva.
