Dear All!
I need your help! My name is Paulo, 46 years old. I’m so glad to find this forum. Here in Portugal we haven’t almost support groups. I beg your pardon for my deficient English.
When does “it” begin?
In May/June 2015 I noted slight problems in swallowing certain foods (olives). Then I feel a small difficulty in forming certain words, certain speech sounds. The difficulties aren’t overwhelming and I tried to hide these things from the others.
In August I had severe recurring headaches/migraine with visual disturbances, also when having sex. These headaches lasted for 2/3 weeks but strangely since then I feel sometimes numbness in small areas in the face/nose. This numbness comes and goes.
In the end of September, my both limbs, in a symmetrical manner, became stiff. My left upper limb presents sometimes fasciculations. When walking I feel muscle resistance and when I take a long walk or when I run for a short distance surges always muscle pain. At the end of the day there is more muscle pain/muscle stiffness. I feel also heat/warm along the limbs. I’m losing weight.
A couple of days later, in September, the same strange symptoms from the limbs now occured to my both arms symmetrically. From the shoulders to the hands the muscles feel weak. If I do one repetitive action with my hands/arms I feel instantly muscle stiffness. If I bend forward, I feel a light pain between the two shoulders in the direction of the neck. When I wake up, the two arms are now frequently numb. My throat fells now different, always irritated, the food has increasingly problems to go through. The speech issues/problems had stabilized since june.
I went first to a otolaryngologist and then to a good neurologist. All testing (MRI, CT scan, ..) was completed except the EMG. The results came back normal.
The neurologist wants me to go to a recommended ALS specialist to make the EMG/NCV test. At this point, I'm really getting scared, scared to death.
On October the 12th, I made the EMG/NCV testing (Arms, legs, tongue, neck). The ALS specialist controlled also my reflexes. The results were normal, he told me that he didn’t believe that I have ALS. Therefore I was so glad. He wants me to come back in 3 months but don’t told me what I possibly could have got.
But the symptoms don’t go away, they seem to progress, day by day. I need your advice! Is ALS now ruled out after this EMG test? I read frightening posts about the bulbar ALS.

Thanks, Paulo

Relax Paulo, you don't have ALS. Not bulbar. Not any ALS.

I read your post and I did not see ALS. Also, you do not have the symptoms for bulbar ALS.

The EMG said no ALS. That's very important.

I don't know what your medical problem is, because I am not a doctor. But you certainly do not have ALS.

Thank you for your helpful answer!
