Hi,

I've just been consumed with anxiety and apprehension in the last two weeks. I have mild clinical muscle weakness in one of my limbs. I can't lift as much with the weak limb and the muscles get very sore while I try to lift. I had an EMG done last week and everything looked normal and the neurologist said no ALS. He said I could either rest it or do some physical therapy.

I have a tough time believing him especially since I'm really starting to struggle with this limb when it comes to lifting weights. How likely could it be that this is related to UMN death yet my only symptom is weakness and muscle soreness after trying to lift with that arm. I don't believe I have any other UMN signs.

Thanks.

There are MANY things that could be causing that, if that is your only symptom. Don't fixate on ALS - I know that is hard. Try to stay calm - most of the things it COULD be are treatable.

If you KNOW that something is wrong, have him refer you to a neuromuscular doctor. They are much more specialized and might can give you some answers, and hopefully a positive one.

Best wishes.

You have gotten really good news. Your EMG showed that your lower motor neurons are okay and your weakness most likely is not being caused by any upper motor neuron disturbance (you didn't mention having any upper motor symptoms like hyper reflexes, spasticity, Babinski or Hoffman signs).

Please believe your neurologists while he is telling you that you do not have ALS. There are many things can cause muscles to become weak outside of motor neuron diseases.

Your motor neurons seem to be motoring along just fine, according to your neuro!

I am very happy for you!
