Get Real
I was in Wal Mart, rollator and basket, and I came upon this
guy.

He was in a PWC, very considerably over weight, with a red
MAGA hat on, Vietnam Veteran stickers on his chair, a small
Trump 2020 flag on a pole mounted to the back of his PWC
and a small black carrier sack hanging from the side arm rest.

And… NO MASK!

On that black bag carrier was in 2” white letters VAMC.
That stands for Veterans Administration Medical Center.

That means he is getting his medical care from the VA.
Veterans medical care (in many cases is free) is a form of
government paid for… Socialized Medicine. Medicare too.

Maybe it’s the meds the VA may have over dosed him on.

My opinion only… he is a sucker and a loser!
(Trumps own words on audio tape)

Maybe it's me... but that is sure hard to understand.

Couldn’t agree more, my friend!

Some people's thought processes are a mystery to me.

Not wearing a mask can be attributed to reasons other than your personal opinion of ignorance; however, to lambast him and call him a sucker and loser is sickening and so disrespectful to any veteran. Period. Have you no shame? The sucker and loser issue has long been debunked and assuaged by the President's actions of rebuilding the military and his support of the VA. Actions speak louder than words. I am a Vietnam era veteran, proud to have served my country for four years, and I am a true patriot. Oh, and excuse me...VA healthcare is not socialized medicine and neither is Medicare. One is paid by the lives, blood, sweat and tears of those who served our country, and the other is paid for by premiums and taxes paid by the recipients. If you want to flat out say you're a Never Trumper, then just say it and keep the personal attacks to yourself. <personal attack removed>

I agree. Keep your politics out of ALS.

BillBob, you wrote....

"The sucker and loser issue has long been debunked and assuaged by
the President's actions of rebuilding"

*It's on video recorded tape... his own words.

And Gen Kelly verified of what Trump said at his son's grave a
Arlington. Things you don't hear on Fox News.

And...

"Have you no shame?"

I'll boast... I am a Decorated Vietnam Combat Soldier who
worked within a mile of the Tri Border, working with ARVN
troops and Montagnards. I am just like the many Generals
who are now speaking out against this President. And now
they are... Never Trumpers.

Are all those former Generals, Admirals and former Chief of
Staff suckers and losers in your opinion? And now former
intelligence people who were in the Oval Office have come
out against the President. All of them are Republicans...
not Democrats

Again, something you won't find covered on Fox News.

You have your opinion and I have mine. This is a Forum... you
may not like what I wrote and I may not like what you wrote.

Then....

"Oh, and excuse me...VA healthcare is not socialized medicine and neither
is Medicare"

Both are government funded and government administered.... just like
Canada administers it's health care so many bash as Socialized Medicine.

Right now Canada has flat lined their virus.

Politics? Veteran benefits are politics... every year the VA asks for more
money and every year it's a battle. And... every Veterans Organizations.
Every Veterans Organization who publishes a monthly magazine has
articles concerning politics and benefits.

No... politics can not be left out when it comes to discussion of
Veteran Affairs. Tell them (Vet Organizations) to leave politics out of it.
Somehow.

I've looked in the mirror, I wasn't drafted, I joined, I served my
country and was decorated for my service in Vietnam and after
in the Reserves.... with an Honorable Discharge.

This is a Forum.

PS. Wendy, I see this is your first post and you just joined last
month. Maybe a suggestion you could make to the Mods
is to move this sub-forum to the Off Topic section.
Also, maybe share your path to diagnosis like so many other
PALS have.

Thanks to both of you for your selfless service to our country. I did not serve in the military so I'm not qualified to comment on the issue of Veterans' benefits, though I am glad that there are extra resources available for Vets with ALS.

I think it's impossible to keep politics "out of ALS". Everything is political today. It wasn't too long ago that national political leaders all unquestionably honored the duty, sacrifice, valor, and courage shown by our men and women in uniform. In my opinion that all changed when a major presidential candidate belittled John McCain's service and said he wasn't a hero. To this day I can't comprehend how any Veteran could support a man like that (particularly one who did not serve). But, we are all entitled to our opinion because this is still a free country, thanks to the sacrifice of men like John McCain.

A late addition for what it's worth....

Those who were drafted served two years. About mid way through
the war it was declared the draftees did not have to complete their
Reserve Obligation, after 2 years of active duty, as previously required.

Two years and out.

I thank them for their service and not going to Canada which many
did but President Carter granted those amnesty and those who refused
to report... burned their Draft Cards.

Have at it.... challenge my Patriotism.

Whatever... there's not a lot more I can write about which might make
some happy. :)

and so it goes

Thanks for the replies...

Does anybody have anything new concerning Veterans or the VA?

Post it. I'll be nice. :)

has anyone had a reply from the program of comprehensive assistance for family caregivers?

Thank you veterans for your service. My dad served in WWII and my brother in Korea. My brother just started getting VA benefits. He likes the local VA in Daytona Beach.

I must disagree with anyone that doesn't think politics has anything to do with ALS. Kamala Harris met with an ALS advocate last week regarding universal health care, and the Affordable care act. The ALS advocate strongly believed we should have Medicare for all.

Just dropping in as a non-vet to note that not wearing masks is a real problem everywhere. Here, it's the law to wear them within 6 feet of anyone, and always inside other buildings, but it's still flouted, including the complex where I live. Given what Covid would mean to a PALS or anyone vulnerable, it's a risk worth noting -- and avoiding when at all possible.

Al, just a reminder that Walmart delivers...please, don't play dice when you don't have to.

Laurie, we tried that and it didn’t work out too well.

We live in a very rural area, our Wal Mart calls itself
a SuperCenter. But the building size hasn’t gotten bigger
in the 30 years it’s been there. The parking lot is always
somewhat full… luck is finding a Handicap slot.

But… it is a very busy store. There are two other Wal Mart
stores, one to the north a 45 minute Interstate highway drive.
That store is in a risky city neighborhood. Many people who
live near that store drive south to our store.

The one to south is also a 45 minute Interstate highway ride.
It is in a very traffic congested nightmare. Crash Alley.
So… a lot of people around there drive up to our store.

So, our store has an inventory problem. They do not have
any backroom storage. Whatever comes in… gets put up.
If they are out of something (too often) it depends on the
next truck delivery. Hopefully. “Out of Stock – Out of Stock.”

We have certain brand products we only buy… Folgers
½ Caff, Prego Meat flavored spaghetti sauce, Mott’s apple
sauce and others for example.

We have one other grocery store which is a Food Lion,
about a 3rd smaller of Wal Mart.

So, it’s easier to just go to Wal Mart, hope for the best, or
find some other item that’s close. If that don’t work… go to
Food Lion and hope for the best there. Or try another day.

We’ve got N95 masks, hand sanitizer in the car. Ann pushes
the cart, they wipe the cart handles off but we bring in our
own wipes too. First thing when we get in the car is the hand
sanitizer.

Has anyone else experienced the same? (Maybe start a new
Thread on another sub-forum.)

Talk about rural… our Wal Mart SuperCenter Pharmacy
closes for lunch from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM. :)

Back to Veteran topics.
