getting light wheelchair in and out without van

We have not yet bought a wheelchair van and want to put off the expense a little longer. My PALS can get in an out of a portable wheelchair (we have a light manual one and a jazzy carbon) but he can't lift them in and out of the car on his own so can't use them if he is alone. Are there any gadgets for this? Ideally he would use his own car until he needs a power chair but I'm not sure if that is possible. We have just started looking into custom manual everyday chairs and rigid models look best for him but i don't think we could put those in a regular sedan? Maybe we just need to get a van earlier than we thought. Thank you for your help - this is new and overwhelming.
