Synchron is developing what may be the first commercially available brain implant that doesn't require cutting out part of the existing brain. They will be recruiting for another US implant trial (very small) later this year, another in Australia, and also are recruiting for a Pitt MRI study that will help fine-tune design. PALS in the previous study were reportedly able to type 14-20 characters a minute.
 
That's quite spectacular! Brain-computer interfaces are what good science fiction is made of.
