Hello,

Is there any difference between twitches in BFS and ALS? Or there isn't a rule?

And about fibrillations? Is it possible to feel it or just in EMG?

Thank you!

GGKK,

Certainly no expert, but it would appear based on what I've read and heard, that the main difference is that BFS twitches tend to be global, harder, and move throughout the body. ALS related twitching tends to be more fine and localized initially.

However, that's not a hard fast rule (you will hear folk on both sides with different experiences), which I think is why you will hear time and time again, twitching is not indicative of one thing over another. Muscle twitching in and of itself is a specific as saying someone is running a fever. Yup something is up, but 99 times in a hundred (acutally more like 9,999 times in 10,000 or more) it's an issue that is uncomfortable or annoying, but not life threatening.

When I mentioned muscle twitching to the neuromuscular disease specialist at the U of U, he did the politest equivalent of an eye-roll and said, "That's not very specific is it..."

Take care,

Robert

My twitches onset were 4 years ago, after 1 year they were less frequent (just sometimes, not everyday) and now, almost 3 years later, they are becoming more frequent/noticed again.

They are not constants (24/7), they are just rapid fires (few times in 1 hour), mainly in right calf (less frequent in quad, shoulder, triceps, biceps, per example, just few times in a day).

It worries me...

All the best for you!

that is how my twitches are. But my neuro told me that fasiculations only mean something by the company they keep, meaning on the emg.

That mean that if EMG is clean, fasciculations are nothing - not caused by ALS, MMN etc.
The company means fibrillations, positive sharp waves, large MUPs, increased insertional activity....

Thank you Blizna.

It seems my twitches (not 24/7 - just sometimes) are different from others BFS suffers...that normally twitches 24/7.

Hello GGKK....Sorry for your worries. You cannot feel 'fibrillations'. They are only picked up on 'EMG. That's what I was told by the doctor.

I had that, and positive sharp waves on one 'EMG' (no diagnoses) and did not feel any thing in the leg, at that time...only weakness. Now the leg get fast twitches, (knee cap) and it swells. Not sure why that happens. (swelling) It has some atrophy as well.

Hope that helps.

Hi G,

My fascics were 24-7 for a period of months and widespread for more than a year. They have quieted down. Had clean EMG. And I was given a diagnosed of BFS. If this is your only complaint you really have to let go of your worry. Easier said than done I know.

My neurologist said me that my twitches were benign...but it was in 2005. In 2006, 2007 and 2008 (until december) the twitches were less frequent/noticed. Maybe because I put the worries out of my mind.

But last december they became more frequent/noticed again, and I also feel some vague pains. But I do not feel the twitches 24/7, just sometimes (mainly in calf...but also in legs, arms, shoulders, back,...).

Last week my twitches and weird feelings were mainly in my right calf...

Since yesterday my right leg seems good...no weird feelings! But they moved to my left leg, around the knee.

Still worried...

try not to worry, that is how mine are. Some days only left calf, then bam, they are in the right knee. Ihave been at this for a year and no diagnosed and I am not that bad off either. While some symptoms are worse, overall I would feel that I am blessed in comparsion to alot of folks.
hang in there and dont let this worry you...
