As a person who has a family history of ALS I'm wondering if exercise (lifting weights) could be detrimental, as in, lifting weights breaks down the muscles and then the body repairs the muscle to make them stronger. But if ALS is in my genes will this breakdown actual cause the muscle to breakdown and then not repair the muscle, in essence speeding up the development of the disease? Thanks - John

There is preliminary research that indicates that c9 orf72 carriers who exercise vigorously for an hour or more daily seem to have na earlier onset age. This is preliminary only, specific to c9 and there so far has been no risk found withexercise patterns less frequent, or less vigorous or less prolonged.

I do not believe the pathophysiology is what you postulated but if you are c9 I would limit exercise a bit to fit below the risk level
