Excessive tears

It has been a painful, burning ting for my husband since the very beginning. Two and half years in and it seems that the burning water has lessoned some. We did seek medical attention, first from the neuros, then the opthalmologist. None could give us reasons other than maybe he was no longer blinking properly and to use eye drops, which did not help. The eye specialist believes the problem is related to the ALS, as well as his eye not tracking properly. A few in our support group also complain of somewhat similar problems. I would say it might not be officiall a part of ALS, but I certainly believe it is.

Bama, Yes, that is what was going on with mine too. In the am it would be all goopy and crusty. That is what I was refering to. we just rinse witha pH balance wash and wipe wipe wipe during the day and evening. It is very painful and annoying!

Some ALS patients with bulbar symptoms can have tearing or laughing that is not related to emotion. It is called pseudobulbar affect. Our doctor said that there is treatment for this symptom. Call the your ALS doctor and see if they can help.

Yes, I am sure all of you or a lot have seen seniors and their eyes look watery...even happens in animals. My mother has it now or has it since her 70's but slowly has worsen. I believe there is nothing you can do but maybe take antihistamine. Please do not try that as each person is different and I am not sure if they even have her do that anymore.
I personally have extreme dry eyes and mouth. No way i can produce enough tears like that..after i cry, my eyes actually hurt due to lack of moisture. Your opthamologist can diagnose this and it is much more intense than just blowing air. But there are drops both otc and prescription depending on severity. So it is treatable to some degree.
i just try your regular doctor and see if they can help you....if you have what my mom has...they fixed her up without going to anyone else.
So...hope this helps...and person 'not me'is 100% correct...if you have a disease not everything is caused by it. You just can get regular sick like healthy people...lol! hope it helps...your husband sounds exactly like my mom explained it to me...i live far away. I think she has times when it is worse but again I could be mistake besides...all are different.

My husband has had the stinging, burning, tearing for two years now. The ophthalmologist is convinced it is related to the ALS. Most everyone in our ALS Support group have some issue with their eyes that they did not have before.

Thanks to all who commented - I will try not to be so sensitive when members post comments that I don't understand to be humor. Just not finding to much funny these days.
