Hi all,
I am going for and emg tomorrow, I never really paid attention to the past ones
What would I here or see on the screen if I was fibs or sharpwaves.
Everyone talks about different noises.

thanks,
crystalkk

Crystal,

It's popping noises that are concerning, however, please keep in mind, you will hear alot of static and fuzz, which is normal. it's the noises that pop which can be fasics or fibrillations, it depends on the timing of them. The rest of the bad things, i don't think you can hear.

I'm by far, not an EMG expert.

Read this, it will help clear things up

?s emg + ? for Al

Hi,

How long does an EMG test take? Are clamps commonly used?

I had a EMG & not knowing little about it, was not nervous. Knew needles inserted in nerve areas involved but since had weekly acupuncture treatments for years + a test from other neuro that was easy to complete was not concerned. That test showed F waves slow.

That EMG test was not difficult w/ most areas except for over the right ankle. Muscle contractions in my legs occured whenever she applied the clamp. She kept telling me to be still but I had no controll over the spasm. After a very long time of trying to be still the spasms triggered huge pain--I guess from happening over & over. Since the needle wasn't problem for me, asked her to leave clamp off but she refused--said results wouldn't be accurate. All this took 4 + hours and I finally started crying from the spasm pain.

I was told all was normal, including f waves & nothing neurologically wrong. My prognosis was good, she said but she never told exactly what was her good news. This was neuro #4; I was referred to her by a ortho. who said I def. had neuro. problems. Ironic.

I refuse to take another EMG as thought makes me cry. I used to rarely cry. My neuro #6's nurse doesn't undrerstand when I describe clamp reaction. She says what clamps? Why did she use clamps? I give tech's answer but she just looks confused.

? FOR AL

Hi Al,

I haven't been on site over 6 months. guess I had to come to terms w/ diagnosis, husband's reaction & often, sadness from posts of deaths. Came on site yesterday & glad to be back.

I recieved a private message from ALS forums 09/25/07 from a dharma, who said "I am new. How are you?" with a hyperlink to their personal email & message to not reply to ALS forums. I came here to check this person out & they are not on membership roster. Their message is like a lot like spams ( why I checked ) I get in bulk all the time. A friend of mine crashed her computer opening attachment on one of these e card messages 3 weeks ago. Is dharma a yet unposted member? If so will answer her query. If not has someone hacked into this site? Maybe should mention that this came a day after B'day greeting from this site---in case there's any connection.

dharma is a registered member with no posts put on board. I have no idea why she would contact you and would be suspicious of someone with no posts.
AL.

Just FYI I received and deleted that same message from dharma.

Crap. thought we were done with this with the new upgrades. I'll ban her.

If dharma is a registered member, why is she not listed in member list? Have checked the roster daily since receiving email--hated to dis new member. Did delete her message today though.

what is ncs test?

What is ncs test & how long do emg's generally last?

Tester had me believing her telling me to relax was exception, not rule. She said a lot of people found the test restful! Seeing someone else post that they were told to relax reminded me of all that.

The clamp only bothered over ankle bone. needle by itself ok but clamp sent me into leg spasms.

Hi Kathmc,

NCS = nerve conduction study. You can put that in an internet search or click on the site below to get a clearer understanding. It goes with the EMG to see muscle or nerve damage/function. Others can give you better details.

Best Wishes to you, Peg

How anyone could find a NCV or EMG restful is beyond me. I didn't think it was terrible but I certainly didn't enjoy it. My first EMG lasted maybe 15 minutes. My second EMG at the Hershey clinic was a little longer. The NCV tests how fast signals get from point A to point B. Check this link: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003927.htm

Hi annamarie,

If I get to go, a stomach virus hit my household, and it was my turn this morning.
I took some immodium and so far so good. But i did not eat anything yet...
I hope it isn't as bad as my husband, he had fever and chills for 2 days, but still went to work.

Yes, I am nervous. I always wonder if the doctor is telling me the truth?
He is doing the emg so the report does not go anywhere else. I do not get to see it.

I couldn't stop laughing yesterday with your reply to Lou about the malnutrition.
The first time I went to ALS specialist and he said no ALS. I couldn't talk about it anymore
all my husband kept saying was the dr said you don't have it...My pinkie finger was bent in and the bottom of my feet were atrophied. (I think I went to soon) but anyway the dr told me my hand looked normal to him and I said to my husband does this look like a normal hand to you? And we fought about it alot.

How are you feeling today?

ncs/emg

Thanks for info Peg & Jeff.

The first test I had was a ncs test & it was short, no clamps & no pain. The 2nd test, that lasted for hours, also tested f waves. I just called them & it was an emg/ncs test. They said their tech uses clamps routinely. With clamps the test results were normal. If only I could wear clamps & walk, practice tai chi, use flatware & get on the floor to do yoga---
