Driving advice

You know your body best. My left side has gone first so I am still driving as well. You know when you are compromised by your reaction times...ie slamming on breaks or gas harder than you thought you did or needed to...if your not sure ask a friend/family member to ride 'shotgun' with you around the neighborhood and give you an honest opinion of how you are doing. Passengers tend to recognize and feel more of your jerky reactions in the car if you are concentrated on driving. Hope this helps!

I think your right kmedsley we do know our bodies best. On my last visit to neuro last week I mentioned about my concern about driving now, I just feel concerned. My left foot has not worked for about a year and right is weakening now, and not so trust worthy, my doc said he wanted me to drive as long as I can..hmmm...is that with or without accidents?...lol...seriously I now never take my grandchildren unless it is a short journey. So ultimately it is up to me, I pray I will not be stubborn and listen to that still small voice that says, "It's time"

My son Johnny, now 21, was diagnoised with ALS about 3 years ago. He hasn't driven now in several months. He still tries to avoid talking about ALS (although it's becoming increasinly impossible for him to avoid an ALS discussion) so we haven't discussed it specifically with him, but I believe he became uncomfortable with his ability to drive safely and he just quit on his own, without comment. :-(

Mixed with the saddness and sorrow that he came to his own 'silent' realisization that he needed to stop driving, is great relief that the worry everytime he got behind the wheel is over.

Valya, so nice to hear from you. It's been a while. Glad to hear that Johnny is still holding his own even though he quit driving.

AL.
