Again, just something to read, maybe while you’re having one.
Not sure how this one will go over.

Ok, guys… what was the first thing you said to the lady you married?
If you remember. Well, today who you married.

After work I would go to Bennigan’s for a few cold ones and join
our usual bunch. At the time I drove a new black Chevy pickup, 454
cu. in, 4 speed, 375 hp fully loaded. Ann often got there with her
friends same time. More than once we’d get there at the same time
and she saw me parking my pickup.

The bar was horse shoe shaped, our bunch often sitting and standing
on one side and hers on the other. I’d look over at her often,
Being in the bar business on the side, I’d do a little promoting and
buy the bar a round, just those around the bar. The bartender would
go around and give everybody a drink chip. “It’s on Al” When Ann
got her drink she looked over at me and I tipped my drink toward her
and smiled. She smiled back.

A night or so later I was at a big night club, it had two bars, one
was on upper level. She was sitting at the upper bar and there was a
space between her and the other person. I didn’t know her name then.
So I put my hand on the bar with a twenty to get the bartenders
attention. When she turned her head my way I said, “I bet you play
poker.” She said, “No”. But she did remember me from Bennigan’s.
It all started from there. At our next meeting she told me, “I don’t go
out on a date in a pickup.” Fortunately I owned a nice car too. Or, I’d
would have bought one quick. :) Still in love 20+ years later.

“I bet you play poker”.

Ok girls… do you remember what your hubby first said to you?

Well, I'm not one of the 'girls' Al, but I enjoyed your post and want to bump it up...

It was in a little café in Vienna, Austria called the Regenwurm, in the late summer of 1984. Don't grab your German-English dictionary, Regenwurm does in fact mean earthworm. Strangest name for any restaurant I've ever dined in. I have to imagine there is a colloquial meaning, but I never took the time to find that out while there.

Back to your post... I'm pretty sure it was "You had me at hello", but I could be mistaken and might be remembering that from a movie.

Truth be told, I don't remember... but I remember everything else about that first encounter. :) Still in love, almost exactly 37 years later.
