Yes. There is a sophisticated system with sensors throughout the chest, carotid arteries, and brain. Sensors detect changes in arterial pressure of CO2, O2, and pH. Response to these sensors can affect respiratory rate, respiratory volume, and dilation or construction of blood vessels in the lungs. The body tries to normalize levels for CO2, O2, and pH.
