My numerologist has been after to me to get the diaphragm pacer. I am on bipap, but she says they like patients on both yo get the full benefits. I could only find one story on the forum of someone having this done. I'm curious how many pals here have had it done, and what were the results and how was the surgery. Also, for those who have not had it done was there any special reasons that you chose not to do it. Just weighing the pros and cons of thiis.

Let me know your thoughts on this matter, it might help me make a decision

The idea behind the diaphragm pacer is that it will maintain your diaphragm strength at current levels. It is believed that the Diaphragm Pacing System (DPS) will add approximately 16 months to the time you have before you need a ventilator. Requirements for surgery are that at least one side of your diaphragm still moves well, and that it can be stimulated via the phrenic nerve. The FDA recommends you have an FVC of at least 45%.

The surgery takes about an hour, and you will stay overnight in the hospital. You will be able to gradually start pacing shortly thereafter. The surgical team will work with you to set goals.

I had the surgery last month. Recovery is pretty straightforward, and I'm using the pacer about 21 hours per day. I don't notice it unless I stop and think about it.

Medicare and most insurance will pay for the surgery.

My only regret is that I didn't get it sooner.

I too had the dps surgery about 6 weeks ago. recovery was easy and I pace probably 10-18 hours a day. my fvc day of surgery 44% today 52% i'm sold

i have been told about 300 pacers have been installed maybe additional pals will provide results some can tolerate it some can't and don't turn it on

I just spent the afternoon doing breathing tests, chest xray and diagram test to get the pacer... meeting next week to see if/when I'll get the surgery
