John, as Lisa/Kim have noted, for the vast majority of PALS, even with a smoking/COPD history, adding even more supplemental O2 in place of BiPAP would only accelerate your decline. You can easily use BiPAP on your trips either on the wheelchair or in a rollator. If you do not have a portable machine yet, you are eligible for one.
I urge you to consult an ALS center outside the VA, perhaps in Chicago where there are several good ones: Rush, UIC, UC, and Northwestern.
