Hi my dad and uncle died from ALS and now I’ve had all over muscle twitches for 4 days. I’m 50, a woman feeling no real muscle weakness. About two weeks ago I had muscle twitching only on and off in right forearm for like three days. Then stopped and now this. I have a very stressful job and am always very tired. I feel that my case is sealed, with the familial history and now these symptom onset. It has to be ALS . It’s been 4 days of symptoms I should go get checked already right? Since the twitches started I’ve been a basket case

If you do not have failure of muscle function, you do not have ALS. Twitching in and of itself is common, nonspecific, and not indicative of ALS. Stress, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and overuse of muscles are a few of the many factors that can lead to twitching.

So based on your post, you’re in the clear.

I am so sorry about your family. Being FALS is very scary.

It certainly does not have to be ALS. It may be completely unrelated. A lot of people in my FALS group of unknown gene status have been twitching for years. Do you know the family genetic defect? Dr Benatar at UMiami is studying asymptomatic gene carriers in his preFALS study.

Twitching can be many things. If it's stressing you out that much, go to a neuro and get cleared with an EMG. You could be twitching for years.

Just another piece of info: My neuro twitches in both legs, constantly, and also has very brisk reflexes. He isn't worried because he is not weak.

I twitch, my mom has benign fasiculation syndrome and we do not have FALS. My Dr. said I probably qualify as BFS also, but no point in testing or Dx because it’s gone on for years. Just yesterday my chest wall muscles were jumping. That one is weird, it’s like you are tickling yourself.

My point in all of the above blather is twitching means nothing. Even if you are FALS it is just to non specific a symptom to mean anything and generally means nothing important.

Thanks for your response, just knowing the history and no other reason for these I feel this way. I have to try to relax

Karen thank you for your response I hope I’m ok.

I hope so much it’s not. How do I find that FALS group? Thank you for your response. I will try to contact that doctor. No I don’t know the gene defect.

Thanks for the reply, but your Neuro? he has been diagnosed? Your Neuorologist?

I will send you a link for the group

If your genetic defect is unknown you would not be eligible for the study with Dr Benatar. If you ever need a neuromuscular specialist he is wonderful.

Hi Nikki thanks I joined the Facebook group. I’ve been looking for discussion of FALS people with twitching for yrs without other signs but can’t find it. Can you help? Would like to read it. Will keep looking.

There are posts scattered throughout the group where people mention it I can’t point you to any particular thread or person.

ALS and intimacy ( sorry hope to not offend)

Hi I posted several days ago about me being 50 woman and dad and uncle passed due to ALS so it’s Familal, anyway for 6 days now I’ve been going nuts no appetite severe anxiety cause of persistent basically all over body muscle twitches for the past 6 days straight. No real weakness however today felt ever so slightly unsteady on my feet, ugh, but did do cardio last 4 days straight and hadn’t gone to the gym 4 days straight in several months. But this was not why I posted.

I know I need to get tested, but deep down due to history I’m already dreading and feel it’s probable I have it and of course don’t want to at all! But it got me to thinking about ALS and being intimate as the woman, not that at all that would be on your mind but my husband is 7 yrs younger and well basically if any woman can answer how they dealt with that issue I would greatly appreciate it. Intimatacy has has always been big with us even till now. So that worries me.

My neurologist has constant fasciculations in both legs and has brisk reflexes. He has had them for years. He wasn't even worried enough to get an EMG because he has no clinical weakness and everything works. He's confident it is not any type of motor neuron disease because it has been going on for over 10 years. He did say his twitches get worse when he is stressed or when he drinks too much coffee.

Kindly read the sticky for this section. Although you have a family history your reason for being here is what we call DIHALS that is concern for your own symptoms. please confine yourself to one thread in this section as the sticky says.

As to your question it is not relevant to your current symptoms. If you are worried abut twitching see your doctor. You are way ahead of yourself
