I agree beauty, greed ,money and personal power seem to be the motivation during these times. Hopefully everyone will exercise their right to vote in November and we can get a replacement that understands the urgency to "truly" restore the respect and compassion in this country.

I plan on going to a peaceful protest Thursday night. It has been organized by my church.

I’ve written about gambling. In the next election too many people will
be gambling if they don’t vote. It’s known over all in percentages that
a majority of poor and minorities do not vote. Conservatives (Republicans)
get away with their agendas to cut health care, Social Security, preexisting
conditions and more because they know the truth of that research.

Those who don’t vote will be betting other voters will solve their
problems. Or, they’re just too damned lazy to vote.

It’s so important that if/when they vote… to vote all the way down the
ballot… local offices. Change for their lives will happen more effectively
if they know who they are voting for locally… their Sheriff, Police Chief,
District Attorney. All too often these offices run unopposed.
Write in a name. So many just vote the 1st third of their ballot.

These organizations who champion the poor and minorities have got to
do everything they can to get those who they try to represent to… VOTE.
And… vote all the way down the ballot.

Another thing happening is Local and State politicians stating/registering
themselves as Independents. Their record is public record… with a little
research one may find they are really Tea Party candidates.

But… will people take a little time to read, do a little research and know
who they are voting for? So far, history leans to… probably not.

Voter suppression is alive and well. We need national mail-in voting. Other countries do it successfully. We already have the system in place with absentee ballots. I've been voting by mail for 10 years.

Prior to our peaceful protest Thursday, booths will be set up to help people register to vote and complete the census.

High schools across the country should have places Seniors can register and there should be provisional registration that becomes activated on one's 18th birthday. ALL colleges should have voter registration as part of their student services.

There are so many ways we can help people register and we need to push hard for mail-in ballots in all states.

One of the issues with the poor and minorities not voting is the polls are hard to get to when you have to take a bus or are in rural areas that don't have buses. And with election day being on a Tuesday that isn't a holiday, that makes it even harder.

I'm sure Martin Luther King, Jr. would be glad if we gave up celebrating a holiday for him and replaced it with an election day holiday.

registrating people at the protests is a great idea

There must be a way in some states to register before you are 18. My niece ( who lives in another state) will turn 18 a couple of days before the November election day. She told me she could vote in the state primary while still 17 because she would be 18 for the general election associated with the primary. i don’t know the logistics but clearly she had to register well before her birthday

you also made me look for MA. I had forgotten but when I moved and changed my address on the rmv site they registered me to vote from my new address and apparently this is opt out for a lot of rmv transactions. There is also online registration and “ preregistration” if you have an rmv id and it looks like 16 yo and up can use it. Not everyone drives of course but this catches a fair number of people including those who get a non driving state id. If states actually wanted people to vote it could also happen with things like SNAP medicaid etc

Single issue voters. Single issue voters degrade the process.

Red neck gun nuts will vote for a candidate who is a Second
Amendment fanatic, not knowing anything about him/her.
They may be receiving one or more public assistance benefits
that candidate is hell bent to cut or eliminate. Or actually have
a job that candidate wants to eliminate, a son or daughter about
to go to college trying to figure out how to pay for it. Yea, keep
Betsy DeVoss in office.

Then those who will solely vote for an Anti-abortion fanatical
candidate. After a child is born that same candidate would
vote to cut any children’s program, from nutrition, to health
care, day care and education.

I’ll go easy on this one… religion voters. The Founding Fathers
were complete on the Separation of Church and State. Some
Christian religions would never vote for a candidate who is
Jewish. But, there is now an Agnostic in the White House. (?)
(They just don’t realize he’s Agnostic.)

Taxes... same from above. All the wants but have this idea
everything should be free. (I'd bet the last big tax cut didn't
do much for most of them. Unless they're part of the 1%
or own a major corporation.)

From all of the above so often these single issue voters will
vote against themselves, their family, their children, health care
Social Security, Medicare and more.

Maybe not realizing they are voting against themselves and
their real life needs for their themselves, family and community.

PS. Didn't get into race voters... the news is covering that.

Our Constitution grants us rights, however those rights come with responsibilities...like voting. The responsibilities of citizens are to become educated voters regarding issues and candidates. Too many people like their rights but don't fullfill the responsibilities necessary to exercise those rights!

Al, You should meet my priest. He is as left wing as you can get. He is the one organizing our Thursday night protest. There are a dozen religious leaders participating in the protest and they are the same ones who protested against LGBTQ discrimination a year ago.

Father Phil constantly preaches about the difference between "pro-birth" and "pro-life." Our County Sheriff is a member of the congregation and Phil is so popular, we have people of all faiths, agnostics, and atheists attending on a regular basis.

Kim, with all I have written I am not a far left... left winger.

I still have a card in my wallet "Standing Member of the Florida Republican Party."

I was raised in a very religious family. I have some deep disagreement with the
Catholic Church. I do not participate in any organized church or religion now.
I am firm believer in Separation of Church and State. If something is against
your religion... don't do it! BUT... don't force your beliefs on me and my life.
(Not referring to you)

Christ was born a Jew, lived his life as a Jew and died as Jew. The sign above
his cross... "King of the Jews." In a convoluted way, 100 years later or more
his followers made him a Christian. Constantine 300 years later assembled
a book which today is called the Bible... to unify his Empire.

Sorry... maybe should have left that out

Years ago I helped Congressman CW "Bill" Young, a Republican, who served
17 terms representing the 10th District at that time. with a few re-elections.
He has since passed away.

I am registered as "Non Affiliated" here in NC. Many would label it as
"Independent"... if so I am truly an Independent.

I still have some Republican blood in me but.... the Republican Party today is
not the Republican Party I once knew. As I left the NRA years ago too.

I keep a copy of the Constitution right at my desk, given to me by the
Scottish Rite Masonic Body.

PS. To any Second Amendment fanatics. The Second Amendment has been
amended twice.... making sawed off shot guns illegal and machine guns.

Whatever.... back to COVID 19. :)
