COVID Vaccine

I'm wondering about my brother and me, both having autoimmune diseases. My neuro thinks I now have more than one, which is very common. Every time my brother gets the flu shot, he gets a very bad case of the flu. Don't get me wrong. I'm in the vaccination camp but I don't want to accelerate any condition I might have in addition to ALS.

I am aware that a number of our ALS organizations are putting out or will put out advisory information about COVID vaccines on their websites -- I was just in a meeting today about this. More soon.

Here is newly released info from ALS Assoc.

remember Kim, any side effects from a vaccination are exactly the response expected...your body producing an immune respone to the illnesss. It proves your body is preparing to protect you.

An autoimmune specialist may better answer the concern you have for the situation of those diseases.

I have a rheumy/autoimmune specialist at Mayo. Sometimes I feel like I'm in a sci-fi movie.

My ALS clinic in Houston said yes to the vaccine. I got my first dose - Moderna - 4 days ago. Really sore arm for a couple of days and a headache but that's it.
Hope that its effective!

VA offered it to me... said health workers first, very high risk next.
I very politly replied... ummmm, no thank you.

May I ask why not, Preacherman?

First, no vaccine that new could possibly have been proven safe over an extended period of time.
Before deploying to Panama in 1979 I was given 11 inoculations... nine of which were shots and that was on top of all the many shots I had received upon processing in to the army. The army has no idea why military members are far more likely to contract ALS than the general populus...... hmmm.
Now on to the conspiracies.... well, never mind that part.

I guess I should add though... just got pretty much completely over covid within the last couple of weeks so...
Ironic part... I probably got it from my home health nurse.
She came on a Wednesday to access my port for radicava infusion. County health dept called on Friday and said the nurse tested positive Thursday morning. Couple of,days after that I had a temp of 102, called VA and they said to check in at the hospital. Tested positive.

Sorry you were sick. We are all high risk and need to trust and embrace science. This is not a political statement.

For those who got or were offered it was it because of ALS? If so, was it due to respiratory compromise? And were your clinics involved?

or do you have another reason such as age, living in a congregate setting or another comorbidity?

every state makes it’s own rules and so far I don’t see anything in MA that gets me out of the last general group - under 65 no special circumstance. curious and , honestly, a little jealous

I see so many contradictions here in Florida how they're rolling out the vaccine. My pulmonary doctor is an authorized covid vacinator.I have an appointment on Tuesday and plan on asking him where I stand to receive the vaccine. I also have a clinic appointment on Friday and will inquire there as well.

During the early weeks of Covid I inquired with my neurologist as to whether I am in a 'vulnerable' category. He told me that I am not, because my respiratory function is not currently compromised. Therefore, I am assuming I am at the back of the line (I'm 50 yrs old). However, I plan to just ask my PCP if my diagnosis gives me any priority, and see if he's willing to put one of those little clear vials with the purple top aside for me. Our Covid situation is terrible here in LA, so I'd really like to get the vaccination.

Florida has no plan. Thousands of people waiting hours were turned away. The way I look at it is I'm in a safe home environment. I don't need to work. I'm a short distance from a huge park where I can walk and sit without worrying about people. I'm also on the beach and can go there. My groceries and other necessities are being delivered. I have a pack of N95 masks and eye shields.

I'm not having any difficulty breathing and, aside from pain and ALS, I'm healthy. I'd rather all the healthcare workers get their shots first and all the vulnerable old people next. Not to make this political but there are many underserved people in our State and they don't have transportation to a vaccination site. I'd like to see those people served. We have terrible public transportation in our area.

Fred, my housemate, has pre-existing conditions but doesn't turn 65 until December. He will get his shot ASAP, although being in Florida, we have no idea when or where we'll get it. I can get mine at my primary care at Mayo if I want to make the drive. I'm thinking it'll be about March or April before I get vaccinated. Fred said he would drive my brother and SIL to get their shots and he would get one at the same time, if available.

The first day of vaccines in my area proved a disaster. People under 40 were getting shots. It was first come, first served.
