Hello. As some of you know, we got our second opinion, and it's not good. Our doctor is willing to do one more EMG/NCS to see if there is any conduction block (which didn't show up on the previous two tests) because we still hoping (against all odds) for MMN. He is also doing one final blood test, for copper deficiency, which apparently mimics ALS. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks everyone.
Andrea

It's a long shot.

If you do a search you'll find many hits. A search on titles gives 4 hits.

Hi,
Testing for heavy metals is standard during the ruling out phase. When I was being diagnosed, my neurologist thought I might have MMN. I even had IVIG infusions while I was waiting for my second opinion appointment. In the hope that it would be MMN.
When I did meet with the "Specialist", I was told that because I didn't pass the Hoffman's reflex test, then it couldn't have been MMN.
Second opinions are so important. Hoping for MMN for you!

And that is a different issue altogether from copper deficiency as a mimic. Excess free copper was found by the OP in that thread in quite a few PALS and they did a small DIY trial with zinc seeming to find some benefit to breathing. My neuro is not quite sure what to do about this my free copper is high and it went higher with zinc

Thanks, everyone. I don't think Michael was ever tested for heavy metals. I will try and get that test, too. MMN doesn't seem likely because he doesn't have conduction block, or GM1 antibodies, and has "slightly" brisk reflexes. Three strikes. But, still praying, still praying.

Copper deficiency is a nutritional problem generally remains overlooked by doctors. Copper plays an important role in neurons myelination, hemoglobin formations, neutrophil activation and collagen synthesis. Its deficiency is noticeable in different forms such as bone mineral loss, seizures and neurological problems, anemia, degraded hair and skin quality etc. It can be identified through lots of tests performed in laboratory through the help of tools present at ilexmedical.com. Several recent research claims that it put big impact in diabetes and cardiovascular disease too. The best protection to maintain proper copper level in the body, you should follow the healthy diet, and supplementation plan.
