Hi,
I posted a little while back but i have some updates. I'm 28, male and back in january started having full body muscle fasculations, not localized at all, just random twitching. In February, I started to feel extreme full body fatigue. I would wake up in the morning and feel like I was hit by a truck. Just awful fatigue. Then, towards the end of February I noticed that my left leg felt heavy. No weakness in the foot or toes, but heaviness feeling like it's coming from the upper thigh. It's definitely affected the way that I walk. Haven't tripped or fallen though. Anyways, I saw a neurologist who found no weakness or anything abnormal in the basic neuro exam but ordered an EMG for the left side of my body. Neuro did the EMG and said everything looked good (she did my feet up to my leg up to my buttocks and my left arm and hand). She told me to see a infectious disease specialist as this has been severely affecting my performance in school and I've had to miss several classes because I didn't feel up to going and felt too fatigued. My appointment with the infectious disease specialist was today and after listening to my story and looking at my labs (i've been tested for lyme, heavy metals, etc...), he tested me for strength and my knee reflexes and said everything looked fine. However, he said that he believes the problem is neurological and that I should see another neurologist for another opinion. I told him about the EMG that I had and he said he has never heard of the neuro who did it and he wants me to go to another Neuro. He then said (more than once) that he is worried about ALS. I am now VERY worried, when before I thought I was in the clear after having a clean EMG. Does this sound like it could likely be ALS? When I posted before, the consensus seemed to think not. But now that this doctor has suggested it several times I'm concerned.

So go see an ALS specialist neurologist if you are that worried.

The good news is that an infectious disease specialist probably knows squat about ALS and certainly found no indications of it.

Best to leave off here until you see someone qualified. I wish you all the best.

ok, i made an appointment to see the recommended neurologist in two weeks. Question though: is severe physical exhaustion (full body) a common early symptom? I don't have any clinical weakness that has been found yet but I have bouts of extreme exhaustion/fatigue where I'm not weak I'm just very very worn down.

With ALS, fatigue occurs after muscles start dying because there is just not enough energy being generated. If you have no clinical weakness I suspect your fatigue is caused by something else.

Nuts is correct - exhaustion is not an early symptom on its own as you have no weakness or atrophy.

It is a symptom of anxiety however.

Let us know after you see the neurologist and save your questions for him/her. Write a list of what concerns you so you can remember to have it all addressed. We can't really do anything more for you until after that visit. Lucky you got one so fast.

Please don't post anymore until after you are examined by the neurologist and ask them your questions. Then we will help you more if we can. Right now we can't really do anything for you. Good luck. Kim
