Hey, first off i'd like to sincerely apologize for what you guys have been going through with this terrible and awful disease. I'd also like to thank you guys so much for your time and reading what I have to say.

So basically I first started experiencing some unusual thing 3 months ago. I was going to wash my hands with some hot water before going to bed and started feeling like my thumb was sleeping on me. My thumb was actually hurting as well I believe. But I couldn't sleep at all that night because it constantly felt like I lost my thumb. Thankfully I haven't had that incident any other time. However, I did go see a doctor and they told me that it would just go away and I should just warm my hands. I did notice that I was getting some swelling on my palm of hand and also started wearing a wrist brace.

I went back to the doctor and he suspected Carpal tunnel syndrome and told me to come back again after a while. Nothing has improved when I went to the doctor again, and he had no idea what was going on. He did refer me to a hand specialist in which I haven't gone to yet. I definitely plan on going though. After a little while of feeling these symptoms of my hand swelling, i've noticed that my hand grip felt lighter than my other hand. When I received this symptom I was quite shocked as I had no idea how it appeared. After this happened is when I started researching about ALS.

I have been having anxiety and stress when I first started feeling any symptoms but that all skyrocketed when I got this other weird feeling of my grip feeling lighter than the other. It wasn't just the grip though, it was kind of like my whole arm didn't feel as sturdy as my other arm. I know it sounds kind of weird but I felt like it just felt lighter and less secure if that makes sense. Now I can actually still hold things with both arms and hands. If it helps, I did start to notice more elbow and upper arm pain. I am not sure if ALS starts with weakness or if that's a gradual thing that happens, so let me know how it may start. Another thing is that if I were to flex my biceps in that arm it sort of hurts more and is harder to do than my other arm.

I think the reason I am so stressed is because of the fact that my physician had no idea what was happening to me. That alone has led me to do my own research and such, which I know is bad but I just couldn't help myself. Im not sure if this helps but I am 18. Again, thank you so much for reading what I have to say and the concern I may have. I am also truly sorry if I am wasting your time, I know time is very precious.

Hello- please read here: Important - READ BEFORE POSTING! Answers to common concerns about possible symptoms

The linked post covers all of what you ask. You report many sensory issues and this is not how ALS affects folk.

If you have been referred to a hand specialist, this is the person to whom you must ask your questions. They can examine you and explain to you what may be causing your issues.

All the best

A leading cause of the feelings you describe is sleeping, keyboarding/texting, or sitting in a questionable position or for too long at once.

See the hand specialist, do as s/he advises, and I am sure you will feel better. All time is precious, so don't waste your life with wondering and what-if's. There is no reason for you to be concerned about ALS. Take care of what's in front of you.

Best,
Laurie
