Agree that you should look at credentials and not only seniority. I would have no hesitancy seeing someone who had a strong neuromuscular fellowship and is board certified and working in an ALS clinic.

I'll jump in and third that - honestly if you can see a neuromuscular specialist in 2 weeks, take that as the best next step.

Thank you all! We just were disappointed because he wanted to be seen by Dr. Michael Weiss and that’s who the Neurologist referred him to, but they wouldn’t schedule him an appointment with Dr. Weiss. He didn’t cancel it though and he has a scheduled appointment with UW Neuromuscular on 8/24.

Dr Weiss is certainly wonderful. One of my friends sees him. However there are definitely other well qualified people in that clinic.

Agreed. Who's he scheduled with? Remember, if there are any gray areas, the younger physician can consult with Dr. Weiss and everyone else in the clinic. It's an academic institution and that's expected.

Thank you - he is scheduled with Dr. Priyank Patel. This was the most recent EMG (I didn’t take a picture of the NCS above).

I concur with the others. The neuromuscular specialist who initially diagnosed my husband was all of 35 years old. He knew his stuff better than all of the specialists my husband had seen up to that point. Don't discount his age; he's been very well trained with 15 years of post secondary education.

Dr. Patel was a UW Neuromuscular Fellow (2019-20) who stayed on as an Acting Assistant Professor. So he should have no hesitation in asking for a consult if he needs one, and will have had experience in the ALS Center. He did his neurology residency at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in NJ, another excellent institution.

He doesn't have a neuromuscular Board cert as yet -- there are not many exam dates and he had to pass the general Board first (2020) -- but my bet is he will take the exam in the fall.

Mods, I was wondering if you could close this thread for replies? The update is he did receive a 2nd ALS diagnosis today. When/if I post again I will post in one of the other forums. Thank you all for reading and providing your time, insights, and information.
