Just quickly, hopefully to help others and reinforce mods…

Had fasics for 3.5 years with a small bit of atrophy (?) recently observed. Have had several posts over this time.

My neuro “didn’t think” I had ALS despite all the fasics. Said he had diagnosed and managed over 1000 ALS patients over his career. He is a neuromuscular specialist.

I followed with him over 3+ years as documented. He never felt the need to do an EMG, and being an internist myself, I had some reservations about his exam.

Finally I contacted him with concerns about atrophy. (I’ve had an ongoing cervical spine issue(s) over the years. He brought me in to do an EMG.

I was waiting for him to tell me the bad news, but a 3 spinal segment EMG was normal, aside from a possible triceps radiculopathy…

No denervation. Period. Exam normal strength and reflexes. Period.

Takeaways for me:
1. Mods were spot on all 3+ years.
2. Neuro was right.
3. I wasted 3 years worrying about something that wasn’t there. Won’t get those years back. Damn.
4. None of us are immune to health anxiety; even those of us who are medically trained. Maybe more so.

I’m not saying that misses take place. I’m sure they do, but probably uncommonly in qualified hands.

Thanks, Nikki and Laurie- and best wishes to all.

I meant to say “missed don’t take place”.

Sorry

Thank you for closing the book here. It does provide valuable context.

I'm sure that closing it IRL, whatever the delay, leaves you with empathy that will only help your own patients as well.

For sure, Laurie.

Often said, tomorrow not guaranteed to anyone, but fear of the unknown is very understandable.

Take care.
