My wife has burning pain in her feet. It comes and goes affecting one or both at a time. They swell, turn bright red, and are very hot to the touch. She can’t sleep when this happens. Is this normal with ALS? Soaking them in cold water helps for a while. Any other ideas on how to help her.

I bought some ice socks on Amazon. I bought large. You put them in the freezer and they keep my feet comfortable for a couple of hours. I have several pairs that I change out regularly. My feet don't swell but I have nerve damage in one foot and it hurts 24/7.

Elevation in the wheelchair or hospital bed while tilted forward enough and with a knee bend so as not to strain knees/hips is often good. This is one of the purposes for which reverse Trendelenburg aka cardiac chair functionality is helpful -- moving the torso, not just the legs. We're not built like accordions.

Thanks. I will try getting a pair of ice socks and see if they work. Sounds easier than getting her up out of bed in the middle of the night to sit and soak her feet. Hope it works for her!

Willy, am I understanding that your wife has ALS? Confused re your asking about the Freedom Bed for yourself in your earlier post, and your self-identification as a PALS.
