The Bernice Ramsay Clinical Research Fellowship supports specialized training in clinical care and research skills related to ALS. This fellowship is funded by the ALS Society of Canada and has a duration of two years, $100,000 awarded per year. The candidate will play a major role in a research project specifically related to ALS.

This is the first year of the Bernice Ramsay Clinical Research Fellowship program. It will help build the infrastructure of ALS clinical trials and attract clinical research and trials sponsored by pharmaceutical companies.

“Researchers in this country have been at the forefront of fighting this devastating disease. The Bernice Ramsay Clinical Research Fellowship will encourage newly trained neurologists, wishing to specialize in ALS, to conduct clinical research and clinical trials in Canada, bringing us closer to a cure,” says Denise Figlewicz, PhD, vice president research at ALS Society of Canada.

In addition to receiving training specifically focused on clinical care of ALS patients, candidates are required to pursue an educational program that has the objective of preparing the individual to design, execute, and collaborate in clinical or basic research. The program should run concurrent with the fellowship and lead to certification, for example a M.Sc. in neuroscience. The candidate will be supervised by a clinician recognized for expertise in ALS patient care and research at a Canadian medical centre with a multidisciplinary ALS program.

The ALS Society of Canada, founded in 1977, is the only national voluntary health organization dedicated solely to the fight against ALS and support for those living with ALS. ALS Canada funds research towards a cure for ALS, supports the provincial ALS societies in the provision of quality care for those living with ALS, and provides information to build public awareness about the disease. The vision of the ALS Society of Canada is to find a cure for ALS.
