We are not quite ready for a hospital bed, but need something lower than our current king bed, which is too high to get into. Does anyone have experience with a sleep number bed? Or alternatives that allow us to sleep together but better accommodate transfers?

I would really consider the hospital bed. Without a headboard or footboard, it doesn't have to look like one -- a side rail is nice for the remote control, but once you throw linens over it in the down position, it's invisible, and the need for better positioning than the Sleep Number bed can give you can arise literally overnight.

You can put a hospital bed 2" from another bed and still touch each other.

I am very fortunate to have an electric power chair which has the seat raise option. Also we have side rails that slide under the mattress.

I bought a Lynacare HC107 bed for my wife. I has the greatest range of motion of any bed I could find. The platform can go down to 7" off the floor allowing for the use of a good zero pressure mattress such as a Purple mattress and raises to 30". It has been a real plus or my wife since she now has to sleep in a slightly reclining position. We have a split king bed and the frame is adjustable to it any width or length twin mattress.
