My brother has ALS and is now in a wheelchair. Transferring him has become more difficult as he loses strength, and he has been dropped a couple of times. There is daily CNA care, but it doesn't extend to evenings. His wife works full-time, they have a young child, and the stress level at home is high. What are our options? He doesn't want to go to an assisted living facility, but that seems to be the only avenue being looked at right now.

It sounds like a lift would be a great start. Your brother and SIL need to have an occupational therapist visit the house and advise them on equipment and modifications. Have you been in touch with the ALSA? The Jim Catfish Hunter Chapter serves all of NC and they are wonderful. They can advise and loan equipment if you can't afford it for as long as you brother needs it. Have you seen the stickys? There is a lot of information there, and you can do a search on equipment and home modifications that will make things much easier and safer.

This is a tough ride--your brother is lucky to have you looking out for him. If neither he nor his wife are on this forum, please suggest that they join.
