Ok, so I have lurked here a bit and read loads of other posts, I have read and re-read the "please read" before posting 100s of times. I think (hope) I know what your answers will be.

Firstly thank you for reading my ramblings. About 3 months ago I started twitching all over, at night, felt like electric shocks and stopped me from falling asleep. Being who I am I was referring to Dr Google and the only thing I could have was MND.

After a week of "shock" twitches I developed constant twitching in both calf muscles. This happened at the same time, watching my son play football both calf muscles started to twitch. This has now happens every time I am at rest, As soon as i sit down slowly but surely both calf muscles start to twitch. There are good days where the twitching is less and bad days when it is more aggressive. What I have noticed its its much worse after exercise, so doing the school run and get back could mean its quite bad for 30 mins then calms. Same with housework too. Like wise if I am sitting a lot in the evening watching TV it slows and sometimes stops. This is wrong but alcohol seems to calm them... Its not I am just not feeling them, If I have had a glass of wine or two and then feel my calf's they seem to have stopped.

They are there when I go to sleep, but must stop in the night as they are not there in the morning till I get up

Because I have read and read on MND I have been measuring them and they are exactly the same size as they were when this started in August. Also I have not experienced any weakness, maybe sometimes they feel a bit tight - but could that be from all of the twitching over the last three months?

I have visited my GP and she found I was deficient in B12, this she said most likely explains the twitching - its just a lot of web sites do not mention twitching as a B12 deficiency symptom (fatigue and weakness yes). I am on oral supplements and have been for a couple of months

I have debated and debated about posting here, as I now this must sound trivial to those of you going through this. But the fact its appeared in both calf's at the same time, not progressed, no wastage, no weakness is giving me hope that it may not be MND - Its just the twitching is a constant reminder it may be

Please accept my apologies if this has upset anybody, you seem like a wonderful group of people on here

Thank you

Hi there-

I don't see you reporting failure or clinical weakness. As you will have read in the pinned link, twitching absent clinical weakness can mean any number of conditions or nothing really at all. If the twitches come accompanied by other symptoms, then those symptoms point to what the issue might be (this is where you would speak with your doctor if so). But if you're just twitching, it may be something you will need to manage by adjusting diet, reducing stress, exercising and maybe working with a physio to deal with any postural issues. Hoping this is reassurance enough for you to leave a fear of ALS and this forum behind.

Please take care

Thank you so much for your reply. I had read all the sticky’s and I thank you for still taking your time to reply to me. I just wish some of the other sites would say weakness or failure come before twitching…. I suspect if they had said this I wouldn’t be here now.

You’re right I have let this ruin my last 3 months. Going to try with all my might to
Put it behind me.

Have a good evening.

Sorry to have come here again. I have a Nuro appointment in the new year as twitching still persists.

Over the last few days I have been way more active and have been feeling sore calf’s along with increased twitching

I will be quick as I appreciate any responses you give can be difficult.

As twitching is in both calf’s and started in both at the same time this seems inconsistent with Als

I have had twitching for nearly 5 months now. No new areas, just calf’s and generally not getting worse (other than very active days)

No clinical weakness just now this slight pain in calf’s after a lot of walking/housework…

1. Reading all the sticky’s and other reply’s twitching means nothing without clincial weakness - correct?

2. After 5 months I would have noticed something other than mild
Calf pain after exercise - correct? (Assuming ALS is the cause)

3. Hoping the twitching could be BFS - is so could this cause the mild pain?

4. The fact twitching started in both calf’s at the same time - after me stressing about MND for a week or so points to it not being ALS as it’s not effecting just one area of one side - correct?

If anybody is kind enough to answer this I would be very greatful. If you can then close
The thread to stop me coming back again it would be good

I am trying not to ruin my family’s holidays with my anxiety

Yes/yes/yes bc BFS works the muscles/yes. You do not need to worry about ALS. Don't let groundless fears ruin your life, and seek counseling if you need to.

Thread closed -- have a wonderful time with your family, and block all ALS sites going forward.

B12 can certainly relate to twitching, as can magnesium and iron, to name two. Ask your GP or a dietician about careful supplementation, even if you just start with a multi. Some people metabolize nutrients faster than others. Some people I know make sure to eat beef or another food with these kinds of nutrients at dinner and feel they sleep better as a result.

If none of this works, at some point, you may want to ask about a sleep study, which often can be done at home.

All the best.
