Hello one and all. My name is Lou and this past Fathers Day weekend I got the worse Fathers Day Present anyone could wish for. My sister called me on the Friday before the holiday and told me that we finally got the results from Mom's test. The Doctor didn't elaborate as to exactly what it was just that it was a Motor neuron disorder. He did however request that the entire family meet with him and my Mom in the hospital where my mom was admitted. That instant, the first thing that popped in my mind was ALS.
Well Monday afternoon came along, the entire family was present and the doctor told us Mom had ALS.

We are all devastated!

My Mom is 70 yrs old. Almost 2 yrs ago she finally retired from her job as a Tailor for Macy's. Soon after retirement her health started to deteriorate. She had a hammer toe operation and soon after developed drop foot. The Doctor thought it had something to do with nerve damage from the operation. Soon after that she started getting progressively weaker. Well after seeing several specialists and numerous tests she was referred to a Neurologist at the Neuro Science Center at JFK Medical Center in Edison NJ
The doctor wanted her admitted so he can run some tests. I guess he already had an idea of what was going on.

So, My Dad, who is also 70, is trying to take care of Mom as best as he could.
My Dad has the early stage of emphysema, so it's hard on him but God Bless him, he tries.

My Brother, Sister and I help out as much as we can as well.

I have read countless articles on the web about this dreaded disease and to tell you the truth I'm deathly frightened of what's to come.

I'm trying to keep my composure and be strong, being I'm the oldest at 47. I still haven’t had a good cry over this and with the way this is progressing I don't see myself letting it all out anytime soon.

God Bless each and every One of you for this place and the help that you give others.

Dear Lou Mo,

My heart goes out to you and your family. You will find lots of support and suggestions on this site. It is amazing how many people are affected by ALS. If you have not already done so it may be helpful to contact your nearest ALS center and/or join a group of care givers for some direct support. Take good care of yourself. God Bless you, Peg

Hello Lou,

I am so sorry you have to go through this. You and your family are in my prayers. Let those tears flow, it does no good to hold them in, in my opinion...you need that release. God bless you. Sharon

Thank you Peg and Sharon.

I have not yet contacted the nearest ALS supposrt center but I do plan on doing so and also attending whatever meetings and functions they may have.

I have a Friend who's Dad passed away from ALS 3 yrs ago so I contacted His Mom and she explained a lot to me as to what to look forward to in the coming years.
God Bless her, she also offered her help with whatever questions, concerns I or my parents may have and she even went as far as offering to visit my Mom ( She lives only a few blocks from my Parents house ) if the need arises.

One Day at a Time...................

Lou, I am terribly sorry. I know exactly what you are going through, I've been down that road, and it's not easy, nor pleasant. May God bless your mom, and the entire family. I just lost my 38 yr old son to als 1 and a half months ago. It was very, very painful. He passed 15 mos. after diagnosed. I am still numb. I have done so much crying, I have no more tears. May God bless your family. Keep us posted on your mom's health!

xoxoxo,
Irma

Hello Lou,
Welcome, and I'm sorry you have to be here.
As a child with a Mother who also has ALS, I can sympathize with you. There is much help and support here and if I can be of any assistance to you, I would be more than happy to.
God bless you and your family.
Nicki
