Hello, I am 23 and got diagnosed when I was 21 I. January of 2021. For months I was having trouble swallowing my own salvia, gagging, not able to eat or drink, and shortness of breath and got diagnosed with bulbar ALS. I went to speech therapy for swallowing excersizes. In march I was finally able to drink water again. Do the exsercizes really strengthen the throat muscles? I also stopped drooling as well. In august of that year I was able to eat again a limited diet of ground meats and pasta with sauces on it. I was able to consistently eat for 8 months and then recently the past two months my sympms have gotten worse again. Not able to eat anything and only have small sips of water. Can also get better and then get worse again?

Hi Cesca-

We are sorry you find yourself here, but glad you've found us.

Are you being followed by an ALS specialist or attending an ALS clinic?

I will let someone else with more knowledge of things bulbar to maybe answer in more detail, but changes in function in response to exercise (what kind?) would depend on what particular issue was causing your swallowing to be compromised in the first place and what treatments/meds, if any, you are receiving as well.

Once again, welcome to the forum. I am sure others will weigh in.
