Kim, if look up Central Sensitization Disorder you might be able to see some parallels with things. I usually go to mod if I post links, but there are a few papers published about links between this and Central Nervous System issues from the NCBI.

I just saw a different specialist (internist) yesterday who has provided me some really interesting food for thought, and your above post reminded me of some information he passed on to me.

Fiona

Fiona,
When I went to Mayo, that was one of the first diagnosis they gave me. I even watched a video they had on it and it fit with many of my problems. It's bad enough with this monster but add the other conditions I have and it is both confusing and unbearable.

I think that is more accurate, overall sensitization. Larry had bits of that in terms of touch/materials.

Regarding the startle reflex: for years I considered my startle reflex to be part of PTSD. It is extreme. One time while walking as a tourist, a friend behind me took a map out of my back pocket. I spun around and instantly assumed a hand combat stance, ready to kill. Scared everybody, except my kids, who have learned to laugh it off. Fortunately, a couple years ago, a therapist took me through about 6 weeks of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, which looks kinda like hypnosis. My nightly nightmares and daily violent thoughts went away. Woohoo! Cured. Almost, I still have the startles. One evening recently in a movie theater, the bad guy shot in the direction of the audience. I instantly leaped out of my seat and began to jump over the seats, as though I were going to attack the movie screen. Most of my startles are tiny and not dramatic.

So it seems there are a huge number of causes for startles.

Thanks everyone for the replies and comments.--Chally, I am registered with my local VSO, he has signed me up for benefits and tells me that he can help me as much as anyone since he has helped ALS veterans before, Do you think I should contact DVA anyway? US Army, 25th Infantry Cu Chi Vietnam 68-69 by the way WELCOME HOME BROTHER Doug

It's PVA not DVA.

Paralyzed Veterans of America has a very good relationship with the VA and a good understanding of ALS (paralyzed) patients.
