19th century actually 😀 but it certainly made great strides in the 20th I remember as a child my father sending a telegram about my sister’s birth. It was possible to telephone the UK I believe but complicated and expensive. I think telegrams are completely extinct now!
 
What a great topic Al ! I've always thought about what is it must of been like for my grandparents to have lived during this amazing time with all the inventions and how much they changed how people lived. A lot were invented in the 1800s but it was the 1900s before they became part of most Americans lives.

Airplanes, Automobiles, Central heat, Electricity ( allowing electric : lights, washing machine, dryer, oven, vacuum cleaner, etc.) Indoor plumbing, and Telephone. In 1900 only 3% of homes had electricity and only 15% had a toilet!
