At our support group yesterday, the rep from a respiratory care provider reported that a new ventilator, the VOCSN has been approved by the FDA. It can be used for invasive (trached) or non-invasive (mask, mouthpiece) ventilation. It combines ventilation, cough assist, suction, nebulizer and oxygen compressor in one portable lightweight machine. It has a single circuit (hose) and each function is turned on with a single touchscreen switch as needed. Sounds like a really interesting, uncomplicated next generation invention. The rep says they have 4 patients on it so it is available now.
Google VOCSN for more info.

Speaking as someone whose pALS and I carry all these things separately on every outing...this is very intriguing Diane. Thanks for sharing! Looking into it here.

But will Medicare pay for it? That is the question.

They should, so long as you have been approved for a Trilogy or the equivalent + at least one of the other functions of the VOCSN. The category (multi-function ventilator) has been approved for reimbursement as HCPCS code E0467. It is a monthly rental, not capped. So you will want to make sure that your copay is workable before signing on.

Best,
Laurie

My pulmonologist was on the research team.
