Hey , I’m 26 years old and I’ve been experiencing symptoms that have me worried and honestly scared for my life. No doctor can seem to figure out why and things continue. Around two months ago I was experiencing constant muscle twitching , to the point where I could lay down in certain portions without feeling it and seeing it. I made the decision to go to a local neurologist.I seen this neurologist once before when I had sciatica on my left leg due to a herniated disk in L4/L5-S1, which subsided over four months ago do to a procedure.

Nevertheless, I told him about the muscle twitching and he wanted to do a EMG/nerve conduction study . Do note, I had an EMG/Conduction study previously for the herniated disk three months prior , and everything was fine, so I said ok, why not. I came in for the test and noticed when he conducted it he was having trouble keeping pads on my skin, amongst repeated spots on my legs he had to do multiple times that actually hurt. When he put the needles into my muscles they also hurt as well(which I Know is typical). Lastly, he only tested my left and right leg(foot, thigh , shin), my right arm(hand), but not my left arm .

After I got home, I was on the couch for two hours and started feeling an extreme nerve pulsing in my left arm, similar to the sciatica feeling. Over the next few hours this nerve pain and pulsing , turned into pricking feelings , numbness and sharp pain to different parts of my body. I got in contact with the doctor but he denied the EMG/conduction test could make this happened, and basically offered me medication for symptoms. Over the next six weeks the nerve pain , numbness, pricking and such, continued but slowly lessened in frequency.

Two weeks ago, this is where my symptoms changed . I woke up on a Saturday morning with my ring and pinky fingers on both hands numb, and slowly my hands returned to normal, but were extremely stiff. The entire day my hands would alternate or at the same time, be stiff, and tight . The following day or two this “tightness” started in my right and left calf when I would walk, stand up, etc. sometimes it would alternate in tightness, and sometimes it would be both legs. At this point, both my legs, hands, and arms feel tight, and stiff. I’ve noticed my grip when this happened is different and sometimes walking can feel like did a mile because of the feeling in my calves.

I’m scared I maybe in early symptoms in ALS. I read a study where inflammation from a nerve injury has triggered ALS , and worried the neurologist may have triggered it. I’m really scared and haven’t received any answers as my MRI’s , blood tests and such are negative. The nerve pain (pulsing, numbness, etc, happens occasionally, especially when I wake up in the morning , but not as much now. Any ideas would help immensely ! Thanks you.

Hello there-

Sorry you're having a tough time with your health. Place have a read here: Read Before Posting as it explains why sensory issues (the biggest concern you report) point away from ALS and towards some other condition. You're 26 years old, which unless you have a known family history of MND, is WAY too young to be seriously worried about ALS. And, no, the neurologist did not trigger ALS in you with their examination and electrodiagnostic testing. There is no such thing.

Keep working with your doctor, but ALS is not on the list of things you should even consider.

Please take care

Thanks for the input! I wanted to ask- I’m still having the muscle twitching , specifically in my calf’s, thighs, hands, arms, as well as the tightness. Would the weakness(not being able to move or walk as well) be necessary for ALS? I understand that sensory is usually a sign it’s not, I’m just worried because the tightness etc, is the majority now. Thanks again for your advice, I appreciate it immensely in this time!

Hello-

Please make sure to read the link provided you above. It answers your question right in it and contains answers to many other questions that bring people here.

Take care

An EMG could trigger irritation in some people, but not permanent injury. I would pay special attention to your sleep, hydration, stress and all the good stuff and let things calm down. Tightness can be an artifact of just becoming hyper-aware of your body. You might consider therapeutic massage, hot tub, etc. to help reset.

Widespread twitching argues strongly against ALS because all the motor neurons don't die at the same time. And since you're still walking and talking, they're definitely still alive.
