Hi I’m 20 years old male and have been experiencing weird symptoms since May/June (was 19 until July)(October currently so I’ve been experiencing this for about 5 months) . I’ve mainly been experiencing twitching and weird sensations in my body, balance and dizziness. Started out with twitching in the legs but within a month was all over my body. Also noticed loss of balance just wasn’t as steady on my feet like I used to be. This was after I spent some time in a mental hospital taking a bunch of anti psychotic drugs maybe 2 months prior.

The doctor told me that this could be a side effect of the specific medications I was taking, I had to take a shot in the back and pills for like a month or 2.

I’ve done a lot of research, and have been scared reading about ALS and need opinions from people, I haven’t seen a neurologist yet, but am hoping to see one soon. Family doesn’t seem as concerned as me so I need maybe another kind of 3rd party insight into what I’m experiencing.

The main things I’m concerned about is the twitching . It used to be in the legs and has seemed to spread everywhere. It seems now that it has no pattern and will be completely random, say my face will twitch and then my leg will twitch . My butt, back , face, neck, stomach , chest , testicles, tendons in my arms that move my fingers, any part of the body you can think. With no real pattern and doesn’t quite look like what I’ve seen online but wanted to see if anyone else experiences that kind of twitching.

Also get internal tremors, buzzing in random parts of my body, occasional short lasting pain, from burning sensations to sharp pains , to dull pains . Have maybe got 2 cramps in the last 5 months not to concerned about that but thought I should mention that.

Also have seemingly had some tongue twitching can sometimes feel it and wanted to know what people feel when their tongue twitches and if I should worry about ALS I know there’s bulbar and limb onset but why would I be experiencing both? Is that possible?

Do people with als progress like this(it’s been 5 months since the first twitching) or have feelings similar? No loss of muscle function , no speech loss, my right leg seems a little skinnier and feels kind of tired occasionally( mainly when laying down) but I can do everything with it still can squat my body weight on that leg, though it’s not too sturdy seems my balance is pretty messed up.

I know it’s a lot to answer and read but would really appreciate feedback and some of y’all’s time.

Have also had numbness in hands occasionally when I wake up from a deep sleep. And occasional body jerks when I try to sleep. Have had a couple times where my limbs felt paralyzed while I was going to sleep or waking and couldn’t move them correctly for about a minute and then they go back to normal when I’m fully awake. Forgot to mention that so input on that is greatly appreciated.
Haven’t had this in a while but felt like I should mention it since it was another weird occurrence. Also sharp pain headaches in the front of my head and sometimes dull headaches in the front side and occasionally back.

Thank you for your response Nikki needed to hear that just have been on the forum as a guest for a while and have seen people with similar symptoms. I know Dr google isn’t the best source for a diagnosis. Will go to the doctor when I can. Definitely need to work on mental health used to have severe anxiety but this isn’t like any anxiety I’ve felt just wasn’t too sure. Much appreciated take care. If anything else develops I will keep everyone updated .

Anxiety can morph into physical issues, over time, and the first issue can feed the second, as it is augmented with the power of the mind. It is also true that psychotropic drugs have potential physical side effects by definition, as does any compound powerful enough to affect the brain.

I agree that there's no reason to think of ALS, but encourage you to accept the challenge that in this next phase of mental health recovery that the kinder you are to your mind and body, and the people around you, the more likely that these physical manifestations will both get better and easier to deal with.

Best,
Laurie

Have a heartbeat feeling in my limbs occasionally . And I’m not sure if this is denervation but when I squat down my muscles ripple in both of my thighs just seemed interesting to me and thought I should note here . Still have daily twitches will sometimes be continuous , the longest it’ll go is a minute tops. But is primarily a single twitch and then leave, sometimes 2 muscles twitch at the same time . Still haven’t been to the doctor don’t really have any money to do so right now does this sound like als symptoms still? Have noticed a definite difference in leg muscle shape feeling both leg muscles but nothing visibly noticeable . Can still do everything the same with both legs.

No. Ripples are not denervation. If you think you are feeling fibrillations seen on emg you are not. Fibrillations can not be felt. Period.

And no nothing else you feel sounds like als either. If you don’t have insurance or adequate insurance that is really unfortunate and I would focus on addressing that somehow. If you can’t afford a simple gp visit what if you broke your leg or had appendicitis or something. If your parents don’t have insurance you can get on and you aren’t in school where you can get it get a job that has it

Kind of sad huh. Currently have a job but with no benefits so I’m just waiting. And things aren’t too great right now had insurance but got dropped from it due to some parent issues. Thank you for taking the time to answer me and helping me understand more. I guess the only thing left is to talk to a pcp when I can and maybe get an emg if he sees it necessary. Thank you I hope you have a good day and take care💚🙏 will post doctors thoughts when I’m able to get in whenever that may be.

There are many options <$100 for seeing a doc via telehealth (e.g., Christus offers TX televisits for $30), a nurse practitioner in a retail clinic, and free/low-cost clinics sponsored by the city (though if you live with your parents they might blink at household income). You sound like you could use some additional reassurance that you are not dying or becoming paralyzed, and that is how to get it.

Do y’all think I should be concerned if sometimes my twitches are stimulated by hitting the area? Seems like the videos with mechanical stimulation to cause the twitching . Or would that maybe be normal with bfs?

MrTuck,

This forum has answered your questions about whether your symptoms sound like ALS- and it's been a resounding "No". While we are sympathetic, this forum can not be used in place of medical attention or to provide continuing anxiety support. There are some groups that provide peer discussion and support for those worried about twitching- reddit has a great one r/MuscleTwitch, and there is a forum on the NoMorePanic website that provides a place for those worried about their health.

I will be closing this thread. Please do not start another.
