I got the trach last week and the operation went well. Its nice to get rid of the mask. It has only been a week since the operation, but the fluid in my lungs seems excessive. Suction is often required. Do you think the fluids will reduce over time? Let me know your experience. Thanks
I have bulbar ALS and have decided to get a tracheostomy next week. Now, my head hangs down from weak neck muscles. I have tried a couple neck braces, but never found one that didn't hurt my chin. Once I get the trach, I have been told that I can't allow my head to hang down. I'm looking for...
Myth No. 1: Hospice care is only intermittent.
The truth: There are multiple instances of PALS who have needed and received 8, 16, or even 20 hours per day of in-home nursing shift care. Unless a patient’s insurance plan clearly and specifically limits it, there is no limit to the amount of...

I'm planning an operation or insertion in January.
I understand the basic dynamics of both. However, is there anybody on the forum that has experience with a heavy mucus flow during the use of said device(s). My concern is that the 'baloon' is far enough down the trachea that mucus can...
My mom is scheduled to go off of her vent and pass on 6/27. She had an emergency tracheostomy and became vent dependent 2.5 years ago.
There is so much more to it, but I'm wondering if anyone on here is even available to offer advice before I do. I don't know what to expect and am feeling so...
I am in that tough situation that I guess most of us with ALS reach at some point.
Recently I went to the ALS clinic and they told me that I needed to decide quickly if I wanted a trach or not.
They told me that if I waited and didn't have an advanced directive, I might end up having the...

Last Saturday, we went to a ENT surgeon for a checkup, as we suspected mom's Trach tube has become displaced (instead of being straight, it was leaned on the left side of her throat. May be due to the vent being positioned on the left side of her bed). Along with that, Sputum like secretion can...
My mom's Tracheostomy tube was replaced last month, with 'Covidien ( presently Medtronic) Shiley 6FEN Tracheostomy tube cuffed with inner cannula'. Recently we've noticed that, she is coughing more every time her ventilator tube moves, which shakes her Tracheostomy tube, as it's causing...
My mom has been using a Bipap device, fr last 2 weeks, after her tracheostomy. The docs had her switched to Astral-100, 2 days back, as it was more suitable for her.
But she has been feeling breathless/ heaviness in chest, often in the evening, after switching. Initially she said she was...
What Ventilator to choose? anyone have idea/experience abt "Microtak 920 Resgate" ?
Hi,
My mom was diagnosed with ALS on Dec, 2015. Recently she fainted & doc's told us that she has type 2 respiratory failure. She has undergone tracheostomy. A Bipap device is attached with the tube.
She is...
