    Wasting Away...

Mom has lived way longer than she should have. Palliative care mentioned cachexia yesterday. Too much fluid and she basically drowns, too little and she basically starves. Trying a higher calorie feed. For my comfort more than it will benefit her.

California's right To Die Law - RULES

Hi everyone, In reading about California's right to die law, I see it went into effect June of 2015. It states that patient must be able to swallow medication independently. Does anyone know what that means exactly? I already have a G-Tube and have trouble swallowing the smallest pill; like...

Transferring Vent PALS to Nursing Facility

Hi fellow CALS, My name is Ariel. It's been many years since I've posted on this forum but our family has determined we need some help form those that might have more experience than us. My mother has had ALS for 10 years now. She's completely paralyzed except for eyes and mouth (which have...

    It has been a while

It has been over 2 months since I last visited the forum and I see that we have lost so many more of our dear warriors. I was having some difficulty with the losses, and then my own body gave out on me. I have been Tim's sole care giver since he was diagnosed in 2012, but have been blessed...

To treat the pneumonia or not..

Mom most certainly has some pneumonia. Sats are lower and lungs are very congested. Palliative care recommended not treating due to her condition versus the ordeal of a hospital stay as it will most likely keep coming back. Mom is not very alert, but I still know she is in there. I chose not...

    Lost a friend

A couple of months after diagnosis Chris met another local PALS through fb. He and his wife came for morning tea to meet us. Chris used the food processor to mix up the last batch of scones he ever made (he was famous for his scones as a cafe owner). He couldn't manage to eat a scone himself...

    Barking!

Ron barks a lot at us but not at our palliative care person and she sees this. She talked to me and Ron's daughter about this yesterday and was wondering why he's so terse with us and yet when she is with him alone, she asks him if he's ok, needs turning, needs coffee, water etc. - Ron just...

A sad update on my dad

I posted a few weeks ago. My dad has been in the ICU since 12/26. His perm-cath was infected and he had pneumonia. Sadly, they also found that he has a volvulus, which is a kink in his colon, often caused by constipation/immobility, so a secondary issue to his disease. The fix for the kink is...

    Palliative care

Has anyone ever used a palliative care nurse? I'm wondering what they could do that all the doctors at the clinic can't. Thanks
