When to stop using hoyer and stay in bed?

My 80 year old mother in law is now entering what we believe are the final stages of the disease. She is almost completely paralyzed from the neck down and needs the bipap 24 hours a day. No trach or stomach tube. Her voice is relatively strong, however, and we have done the maximum to give...

    Accessable Travel

I can barely walk with walker. I have PWC and use a hospital bed. Wife wants to do one more cruise, but I envision all the problems transferring and getting in and out of bathroom and bed! I now can get out of hospital bed if I raise it until feet barely touch ground. Am I crazy, or is...

Please, read. Advice needed. Out-of-pocket care options?

Hello, I’m new to this forum. My mother was diagnosed with ALS in June of 2017. However, we believe her symptoms began a year or more prior. As you all know, it was devastating. My father is her primary caregiver. The ALS Association assists us with a nurse aid for 10 hours per week. We...

Any tips for transferring to toilet?

My family is struggling to transfer me on and off the toilet. It was not as bad until recently I have little strength in my legs. My wife tries to get me up from under the arms and tries then to hold me up as she pants me. Then down on the toilet. Then she goes under the arms again and tries...

    Getting out of bed

My father's arms have failed him before his legs. Up until now he has been kind of "rolling" out of bed onto his knees and using his stronger left arm to hold on to the mattress and stand. They recently lowered the mattress because it was too high for him to get into. This now has made it...

    Rough Clinic

Today was another clinic visit in Hershey, PA. It was a rough day. My breathing numbers were so far in the tank that they have set up for HOSPICE to visit me Friday. My strength well they recommended that I move to the power wheelchair full time (I did have two falls this month) and that I get a...

    Hoyer Use on Carpet

I am trying to use the Hoyer lift to lift Frank from wheelchair to bed but am finding it almost impossible to move the lift on the carpet even though we have very low pile, commercial carpet in the bedroom. I was thinking of buying several of those plastic pads that you typically put under...

    Hoyer Transfer to Toilet

I'm having trouble getting my husband on the toilet correctly with the hoyer lift and U sling. I can get him up out of bed and roll him over the toilet (equipped with a bidet seat), but when I go to lower him, he ends up too far forward. I have tried grabbing the hand-holds in the back and...

    Toilet lift question

Standing from a sitting position is getting really difficult for my husband. We just ordered raised toilet seats as well as the toilet pedestals. Will this be enough or should we look at getting an electric lifting seat? Are those even helpful? We have a very small bathroom that we plan to...
