    My wonderful father passed

He passed this morning. I'm glad I got the chance to say goodbye. The feelings of sadness and guilt are overwhelming. Many thanks to all of you for your empathy and advice. My thoughts will be with all of you.

    Disoriented after using BiPAP

My father is trying out the BiPAP. Twice he's done it for naps and wakes up completely disoriented and with trouble speaking. After a bit of time he seems better but it is so scary watching him wake up so out of it. Has anyone experienced this?

Choosing not to get feeeding tube?

My dad is 86 and was diagnosed with bulbar onset ALS earlier this month though he's had symptoms for about 18 months. He has lost a lot of weight and increasingly has trouble eating. We've discussed a feeding tube and he's unsure. I'm concerned about him having the insertion surgery given his...

Symptom of ALS or something else?

Bless all of you for your patience with all of my questions. I do try to google things before bothering you but I don't always get answers. My father (who is 86) is describing a feeling like he has something pushing around his head or feels like there is a blanket over his head and it feels...

    BiPAP advice

We got the BiPAP delivered for my 86 year old father today. Though the tech was great at showing how easy it is to use, my father does not seem interested in even trying it. Any advice on how to encourage him to use it? Any workarounds for his glasses? He's got the bigger mask because he's a...

    Strange vibration like symptom

My father who was diagnosed earlier this month, has been complaining that at night when he's trying to sleep he sometimes feels like something is vibrating inside his throat, almost in time with his pulse. He says that it seems to resolve when he takes a deep breath. Anyone experience this?

How to make peace with Dad's decisions

My Dad was just diagnosed. In fact we are having our first follow-up since hearing the news tomorrow. We have talked briefly and all he keeps saying is (1) he doesn't want to live with me and my family because he doesn't want to be a burden and (2) no ventilator. He doesn't quite understand the...

    Med Cottage

Has anyone had any experience with one of these pre-fab cottages (they call them granny pods) that can be built quickly in your backyard? I'm still struggling to figure out the right solution for my 86 year old fiercely independent father. He's in a ground floor apartment (no stairs) right...

    Assisted living

Not sure if this Newly Diagnosed is the right place to post so please forgive me if it's not. We are moving down the pathway of looking at assisted living facilities. My dad currently lives in a ground level apartment but won't let me help him in any way (cooking, cleaning, etc). Any tips for...

    Introducing myself

I posted several weeks ago about my Dad who they suspected had ALS and we have a confirmed diagnosis as of today. My dad is 86 and it took a long time to get a diagnosis given his age. We are not shocked but very saddened and overwhelmed. I know it's going to be a long haul and my father is...
