ALS diagnosis being questioned by specialist--can anyone suggest why?

Hey guys, We went to Syracuse for the tests, and it looks like my mom has ALS. Sorry for the delayed update-- the experience we had with the Dr was very unprofessional, and I've needed some time to kind of relax. *********START RANT********** After they finished my mom's test the Dr came...

Can anyone tell me what I should "look for" during the EMG?

ALS diagnosis being questioned by specialist--can anyone suggest why?

Thank you so much for your responses everyone--I really appreciate it. We're trying to think positive thoughts and be patient. The specialist had all of her previous lab and test results, but the neurologist told my mom they'd probably re-do some, if not all of them. I'm hoping that means the...

ALS diagnosis being questioned by specialist--can anyone suggest why?

The Doctor she saw in Syracuse was a specialist in ALS--at least he's specialized enough to be assessing candidates for drug trials. The first Dr. who diagnosed her was a normal neurologist.

ALS diagnosis being questioned by specialist--can anyone suggest why?

Hi Guys, First off, thanks for reading. I started a thread on the general discussion forum, but I thought this was probably the better place to ask my questions. Basically, my mom was diagnosed with ALS last month, but when she saw a specialist 2 weeks ago, he told her she may not have ALS...

    Riluzole

My mom had to stop taking the riluzole too. It was weird though because she didn't have a bad reaction to it immediately--it took about three weeks. She would get nauseous, then shake like a leaf, then get really cold, and then get normal over the course of 4 hours. And she had no appetite...

Has anyone else had cancer prior to ALS?

My mother had breast cancer when I was in 3rd grade. She had chemo and a mastectomy (and they took some lymph nodes too), but no radiation. Her skin cancer they just cut out, and they gave her a hysterectomy for her uterine cancer. I'll have to ask her more on what her chemo treatment was.

ALS vs MMN w/ conduction blocks?

The Dr who diagnosed the ALS is a neurologist--to my knowledge he does not specialize in ALS. The doctor she saw in Syracuse runs ALS trials. I would think this second guy is more knowledgeable, but I'm not sure. I asked my mom for more clarification on the reflex thing, and she said she...

Has anyone else had cancer prior to ALS?

My mom was just diagnosed with ALS (possibly MMN w conduction blocks). She's had 3 different kinds of cancer in the past 15 years; she had chemo treatments for breast cancer, and we were wondering if anyone else on here has had cancer/chemo treatments prior to getting ALS. I don't *think*...

ALS vs MMN w/ conduction blocks?

It's funny that you mention CIDP, because that's what I thought my mom had before the doctors told us ALS. I asked my mom about getting the test date pushed up, but she thought that the doctor had given her the later date for a reason (what that reason would be is beyond me). I know this is...

ALS vs MMN w/ conduction blocks?

Hi Guys, My mom was diagnosed with ALS on March 5th. Over the past year she has experienced increasing weakness in her arms, along with some trigger finger-like symptoms in her hands. She also had several uti's/urinary problems. After this initial diagnosis, she decided she wanted more info...
