  • Hi Spangun, I am so sorry for what you are going through, but my 23 year old college-student son is in your shoes. His dad has both ALS and frontotemporal dementia.

This disease takes so much, the last thing we want as parents is to have it ruin our kids' lives as well. Please see a counsellor at school, or call Samaritans. My son sees a counsellor at college.

It is a terrible shock. That's where researching the illness, talking to someone, on the forum, and concentrating on your work will help. Keep physically busy, too. Your mom will need you in the future more than ever. Your work can become a healthy escape from things you cannot change.

If you have difficulty coping at school, do visit disability services or the dean, and explain. My son did that and had some classes removed from his course load until the next year.

Your continuing to do well at school is the best way to help your parents. It will be one less worry for them. Take care!
