Don't know if I sent this to you or not ... I seem to have sent it to myself! If you get 2 copies, chalk it up to senior moments.
Bless you Diane ... actually, he's not at all well. He has not been able to eat at all for several weeks. He's lost 12 pounds in the last month. He tries to eat, but after two or three bites, nausea and "feeling sick" wash over him. He saw his kidney guy last week, and the doctor was really alarmed. He gave me a note to give to our PCP (we were seeing her the next day), saying that Paul must be examined stat for stomach or colon cancer. I've Googled (of course), and his symptoms (vague though they are) are classic stomach cancer. Nausea, unable to eat, feeling full and bloated after a few bites.
His brother died of stomach cancer (it is the #1 cancer in Japan, because of the diet. Paul is 2nd generation Japanese American, but we eat a lot of Japanese food because he loves it, and he's eaten a pretty traditional Japanese diet most of his life), and a first-degree relative with stomach cancer is one of the big risk factors. Anyway, we've got an appt with a gastro next Monday, and Paul's had x-rays and blood tests for it. I am determined not to let him lose more. He can't eat my milkshakes as they are too bulky, so I'm giving him Ensure in a demitasse cup every hour. If he can only eat three swallows, then I'm trying to sneak the calories past his nausea, and it's working. I'm getting 4 cans of Ensure in him a day, which is 1,400 cal. He spends the day in bed, feeling too lousy to get up.
His PCP prescribed heavy-duty nausea pills ... which are used for chemo patients ... and the insurance won't pay because he's not on chemo. The damn things are $10 EACH ... so the drug store is selling me six at a time. The thing is ... they don't work. So clearly, there is something in his digestive system causing the nausea. Anyway, at least I have a few on hand for when he is in great distress. I have to give him something. I feel so helpless ... but mad, too. If the PCP had only looked for a cause of his nausea before, instead of just shoving more pills at him, maybe this could have been evaluated sooner.
At least I hope that when he takes the nausea, he gets partial relief.
Sorry this is so long ... I needed to vent !!! We'll know more Monday. His gastro guy is really top-notch.
How are you doing? I LOVE the photo of you and your daughter. You are two good-looking babes!!
