Awaiting diagnosis - Here is my story

From a neurology textbook I have access to online: 'Fibrillation potentials and positive sharp waves are found in conditions with increased muscle fiber irritability. They occur in denervated muscle but may not appear for 3 to 4 weeks after an acute neuropathic lesion. They are also found in...

Awaiting diagnosis - Here is my story

My two cents: It is highly likely that your EMG had fibrillations and positive sharp waves, otherwise the neurologist would not have considered ALS or MMN as a diagnosis. The IVIG was given for the possibility of MMN. What I have learned is there is no great ALS test, and the diagnosis is made...

    EMG + Diagnosis Update

Zac You know what I'm going to say, right? What all us doctors say... you really need to go see a doctor, just as I did when my fear ran amuck. Pain and ear ringing are not typical symptoms for ALS. Please go see a doctor. It is truly the only way to get a diagnosis. And now, as I've...

    Good news

Hi all Today, I had my second EMG which did not show fibrillations, unlike the first EMG, and was described as normal by the neurologist. I believe it is likley that I have benign fasciculation syndrome. Because I have spent the last couple of months skeptical, cynical, and worried, it is...

    EMG + Diagnosis Update

I am a physician, but not a neurologist. However, I do know that fasciculations can absolutely be benign, and if you have an EMG that is 'normal,' meaning no fibrillations or positive sharp waves, than you likely have benign fasciculation syndrome or some other benign condition. Now, what I...

    EMG + Diagnosis Update

Hi Mike Well, that's not good news. My first neurologist, for some reason, seems to be hopeful that I don't have ALS based on the fact I am not weak after 4 months, yet, I keep reading of those who had fasciculations for up to a year prior to weakness developing. She also clearly saw...

    EMG + Diagnosis Update

Thank you for your responses. Mike, I did read your web page and appreciate your sharing of it. Was your choice of 'A Brief History' related to the most famous ALS patient of all, who wrote 'A Brief History of Time?' I was to have my EMG last week, but someone screwed up the referral, and...

    EMG + Diagnosis Update

Hi all Hope you all had happy holidays. I had my first EMG Nov 7th, which was read as possible ALS. My fasciculations started in my left foot/leg then right foot. I have fasciculations everywhere, but less frequent. I've even had a couple in my face. Anyways, I saw a second neurologist on...

    Thank you

Hi I just wanted to thank those who have this terrible disease for their kindness and concern to those who worry about having ALS and to those who do have ALS. Also, I would like to thank those who did respond to my previous posts. For me, it hurts to read of those who are newly diagnosed...

    Question for ALS patients

I had fasciculations before cramps...don't know if the order means anything. My fascics started about 2 months ago in my left leg and spread to right leg, then upper back. Where did your weakness start, AL? How long into your symptoms did you have your first EMG?

    Question for ALS patients

Hi again I am currently in the middle of a workup for 'possible ALS' (neurologist quote) and I have an abnormal EMG. I have fasciculations in both legs and upper back. I am now starting to get cramps in both feet, calves, and upper back. I have not noticed any significant weakness...

    EMG results

I wish I had answers, but I don't. This stuff is just out of my realm of knowledge, being internal medicine trained. I am just trying to learn what I can about current possibilities, but at the same time, I don't really want to read to much, unless I am diagnosed. I had read somewhere that...

    EMG results

Thanks for the reply. Chuckle...good thought...no, my wife isn't a physician. She is an accountant, or, as I fondly call her, a number-puncher. I chose 'paradox' because I am, metaphorically speaking, a physician looking out from the other side of the bedrail. Currently, I fit in the category...

    EMG results

Thank you Al. I had already reviewed the differential diagonosis, which I why I am so nervous. I have access to several full text medical journals and medical textbooks online. My EMG findings and my clinical presentation don't really fit into anything else. I do appreciate the link, though.
