    Mom insecure about her speech

Firefighter58, we are so close! My mom is going to the clinic in London, and had the second opinion done at McMaster. I wish the voices for the text-to-speech were a bit better. They are difficult to understand sometimes, but you're right, it does do the trick. I hope she'll become more...

    Mom insecure about her speech

Hi guys. This one might be difficult to answer as it's more a mental thing, but I cannot convince my mom that her having to use an iPad to communicate is fine and normal. She's so insecure about being in public with it. Some back story: mom recently diagnosed/confirmed ALS in October. She...

How to get saliva out of mouth?

Hi guys. My mom's been having problems with too much saliva building up inside her mouth and not able to get it out. Any tips/tricks for this? She is unable to spit, but can still use her arms and hands. I suggested maybe wiping it out with a cloth or tissues. Open to any other ideas – thank you!

    Diagosed with Possible ALS Yesterday

I'm so sorry to hear this, Kelly. Very similar to my mom's story. We finally got a second opinion and had the "possible" confirmed just a few weeks ago. Then, her first clinic a few days past that. There was some progression and she has very minor weakness in her left side. We are hoping it...

A post for women with bulbar

Kimmy, I'm so sorry. My mom also has bulbar onset. I was just reading about Deanna yesterday as well. If you have questions, there is a number to call and a live chat. I found them very helpful. It's definitely not a cure, but the supplements seems to boost energy in people taking it, if nothing...

When do they hit you with the prognosis?

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I am so sorry to hear about your mom. But glad to hear she left peacefully while at home, that must be comforting at least. Sending you hugs!

When do they hit you with the prognosis?

Mike, thank you for sharing your story. I'm very sorry to hear about your wife. I was wanting to know for practical reasons as well. The neurologist said she will let me know when the time comes. You're absolutely right about holding on to hope.

When do they hit you with the prognosis?

Thank you all so much for your thoughts on this. They did not give us any prognosis yesterday at the clinic, and I felt relieved. I had my paperwork for Family Caregiver Leave (we're in Ontario, Canada and this is a workplace security option where you are allowed 8 weeks per calendar year off...

When do they hit you with the prognosis?

Thanks guys! Yes, this helps. I was thinking of asking in secret too, in case my folks don't want to know. Her symptoms started in May of this year with slurred speech and difficulty swallowing. That has progressed quite a bit and she now has weakness in her entire left side. I suspected Bulbar...

When do they hit you with the prognosis?

Hey guys. Hope you're all okay! My mom just got confirmation of ALS from a second neurologist last week, and are going to her first ALS clinic day tomorrow. I was wondering when the doctors will tell us how long my mom has? Will they let us know tomorrow at the clinic after doing an assessment...
